Since Pirates of the Caribbean was released, I'd like to recommend a far better movie in case people come out of it with a bad taste in their mouth. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. I went into this movie thinking it was going to be terrible and came out having a new movie favorite. Give it a try. It's one of the only times I'll use the term 'excellent' in its proper form.

It's a good movie, if you like Russell Crowe. But it is a totally different genre to PotC.

I enjoyed it thoroughly. The only thing I didn't like is that the story didn't finish within the movie a la matrix 2. But besides that it was a good movie that was strong in everything that made the 1st an excellent film. If you liked the first, you should like the 2nd.

Well said. And sorry, Artap, but the whole "I'd like to recommend a far better movie" sounds really pretentious (and some of my friends think I'm a film snob). Have you even seen Pirates 2 yet?

I saw POTC2 a over a week ago at a screening. I didn't hate it, but most of the people I saw it with did. I understand that they are different movies and all, but afterwards I recommended MACTFSOTW to a few of them and they scoffed. Since they are sailing movies, I'll just say that the wind was knocked out of my sails.

My friend and I went out yesterday afternoon to see one. We both had limited time so we just went to a matinee around 4:30.

Originally we were going to see "Click" but just as we were sitting down we decided to see "You, Me and Dupree" instead. I know, we could have gone to any of the screens in the whole place, and that's the one we picked. Just goes to show how much of a movie wasteland this summer has been. We've both seen Pirates so that was out.

Anyway, it was really stupid but it was pretty funny especially since Owen Wilson's character is exactly like one of our friends... the difference being that Owen Wilson's character actually turns his life around eventually and stops fucking up.

Little Miss Sunshine looks to be great. I'm not going to read the NewYorker review until after I see it.

The two director's seem to have made nothing but Janet Jackson and REM videos though.

I thought Pirates 2 was great. The first one was brilliant, this one was great. A step down but still well done. Just don't eat before you go look at squid face.

Superman Returns was IMO a tribally boring and trite attempt at movie making.

I was really excited when I came home and found that two DVDs I had ordered from half.com had arrived. I have a lot of sisters so we order a movie if it is something we all want to see. A penny saved is a penny earned and all of that.

I have a great affinity for bad scary movies so I am really looking forward to watching The Hollow. It is the Legend of Sleepy Hollow staring Nick Carter (yes the former Backstreet Boy ) and Kevin Zegers.

The other movie is Transamerica which also stars Kevin Zegers. This time he pairs with Felicity Huffman in the story of a preoperative MTF transsexual who discovers she is the father of a young man. I've heard it is very good.

I just re-signed up with Netflix after a long hiatus (busted DVD player, then busted speakers, then no time to watch any movies) and I watched two of the three movies I have from them last night.

Pleasantville: I was only 7 when it came out, so I don't know how much publicity it had back then, but I never would have heard of it if it weren't for Netflix's recommendation. Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon are transported back to a 1950's sitcom (Pleasantville), where, predictably enough, everything is pleasant. Gradually, they introduce change (and color) to a town that has never known either. I thought it was a good film. 4/5 stars.

I Am David: Another movie I'd never heard of, but one I liked. A small boy escapes from a Communist concentration camp in Bulgaria with a loaf of bread, a compass and a letter he must deliver to Denmark. If you enjoyed Everything is Illuminated, you'll probably like this. 4/5 stars (one extra because good child actors are hard to come by).

Coming soon: The Majestic, Frequency, The Pentagon Wars and The Truman Show. We just finished our home theater and we intend to use it. A lot.

I watched Kill Bill, Volume 1 last night, for the first time. I've have a lot to say about it, but suffice it to say, I give it a 'Thumbs up'. (I know I'm living in a different century, but humor me. )

It was just fun candy. Loved the scene in the Japanese bar/restuarant. Quite an authentic atmosphere, minus the lack of people and smoke.

The only thing that bothered me was Uma saying OkAnawa, and sakii instead of Okiinawa and Sake (eh). Reminded me of Bush saying nukular. I was surprised that Mr. I'm-in-the-know Taratino didn't re-take those shots.

I liked volume 1 alot more than volume 2. The restuarant scene is great. And the girl who plays Gogo...... *drool*

I've been on a bit of a Tarantino/Rodriguez thing here lately, renting "From Dusk Til Dawn", "Mariachi", "Desperado" and "Sin City" all within the past couple of days...

Realizing how fun of a movie "From Dusk Til Dawn" is (only my second time seeing the full, unedited, non-TV version of it). And holy crap, is Salma Hayek's little dance the sexiest thing I've ever seen on film...

I rented the two Kill Bill things a while back, and they were okay.

Looking forward to Grind House in '07...

Tarantino, of course, works my nerves to no end in interviews and so forth. I can't stand to listen/watch him, but he does write snappy, funny dialogue, and movies with his writing are definitely fun to watch. But he's such a spastic asshat (and a bit too enamored of his own abilities and skills at times, IMO). But the idiot can write.

And what IS with Tarantino during interviews? He really comes of as nerdy twat cool guy wanna be. He can be very annoying. But he can come up with some witty stuff in his movies.
