Alrighty, so I'm going to go camping a little later this summer and I've always been bad with knot tying so I need to learn. However, I'm not sure what the best way of learning to tie knots is and what kind of knots I should learn. I've found some good sites with animations but they don't really give me the type of knots I should be using/what situation works best for what knots. Does anybody know of a good book or have any suggestions?

This kind of thing would have been in a scout handbook. I remember it listing various knots when I was in Boy Scouts and when I needed it for. Unfortunately, the only thing I still remember was the square knot, which is used to tie two pieces of ropes together.

What are you going to need them for? The only thing that comes to mind is a taut line hitch to secure a tent's rain fly (always set up the rain fly unless you're in a desert and sure it won't rain at night).

Oooh, knots are a little science all in their own right. You'll definitely want a soft and malleable piece of rope or two to practice with and then some step by step illustrations. A quick google produced this website in english: http://www.netplaces.com/knots/learn...-functions.htm The guy also sells a book about knots. Not that I know if it's any good, but the info on the website seems to suggest it. Otherwise just check out Wikipedia.

In most mundane situations any self invented knot can be made to work, but the girl guides won't be impressed with you.

For basics: http://www.amazon.com/Klutz-Book-Knots-S/dp/1591748089

For comprehensive: http://www.amazon.com/Ashley-Book-Kn...2554799&sr=1-1

The second one is *INSANELY* complete, but the first one is much more usable.

Good book on knots and ropes in general. Although focused more on the vertical, it covers a mountainous pile of rope-tangling techniques. I have a copy and it is a good read, if not a bit technical.

Here's a good website with basic knots. I like this one because it breaks its videos into discreet steps, so you can clearly see what the move is before going on to the next one. After that it's just practice.

And here I thought you were looking for innovative ways to propose. It would have been a clever thread title. The OP could still be a metaphor for the whole thing. Oh well. I'll just chuckle in my head about it.

Just be sure not to confuse your quick release knots with your slipknots.
