So today while looking under a table in one of my classes, I found this beast!
The best floppy ever, 90 megs, thats more than a CD [/joke]. Floppies are not obsolete!!! Haha! I saw this and had to post it! Thoughts? Do floppies pwn? Can a floppy really bend? If you can read this this, please send to an admin, i am blocked and cant post.... Last edited by Schnauzer : 2008-03-28 at 10:48. |

Those aren't true floppies.
This is a floppy: I used to have an old Mainframe floppy, that was, if I recall, about 10" square. And yes, they do bend. Do you know where children get all of their energy? - They suck it right out of their parents! |

Aren't CDs around 700MB (give or take)? I can't remember...I know it's way more than 90MB. Gosh, I've not touched a 3.5" floppy (okay, that just sounds weird) in years (even weirder). I remember having them all around, with stuff crammed on to them. When those 100MB Zip drives came out I remember thinking "finally, some real storage...this rocks!" Now we have little USB flash drives the size of a french fry or ChapStick tube and hold 2-4GB. |

A CD holds over 740MB... not sure how that's smaller than 90...
Technically, a Bernoulli cartridge is a floppy - the material inside is mylar, basically the same as the media in a floppy disc. The Bernoulli effect (air pressure differential) is used to suck the mylar up close to, but not touching, the read/write head, giving it a much higher data density. This requires a hard, air-tight case, but the media material is floppy. A hard disc is named such because the media platter is made of a hard material, not because of the case. zippy: 8" floppies were the std size, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were larger ones. |

pscates, I think it was a joke.
Also, check out some of the crazy size comparisons I was able to find. On that second picture, you can see a zip disk, a 3.5" floppy, a 5.25" floppy, an 8" floppy, and a 15" disk of some sort. I have no idea what the huge disk is in the last image. |

Sorry. Apparently I'm really bad at picking up on such things here lately (ask Taskiss).
I used to be more smarter. |

Seems like it's a recordable Laserdisc used for data backup.
