Fossett successfully flew nonstop around the world by himself without refueling. Pretty amazing. I watched the landing on CNN, I can't believe he stayed in that cockpit for 3 days in the air. He barely could get out it was so small. I can't believe this hasn't been talked about here or really anywhere else. No one seems to care. Has flight really lost its luster?

Got to love cnn's homepage headline picture....

Dude, they're giving away flights on Virgin Galactic to sell Volvos.

I really am amazed at this feat, but yeah, it's not Newer Faster Bigger, so nobody really cares.

Lindbergh became an international celebrity, but Fossett? Meh.

yea, the CNN coverage was horrible. I don't know who the woman news anchor is at 2:30PM EST but she is an airhead. What a bimbo. She just would say the dumbest things you could possibly think of. If anyone else watched you'd know what I'm talking about. The best was when she was interviewing some guy and talking about Fosset's headache she was saying it was probably attributed to the stress of the gas problem, and the guy she was interviewing was like....errrr...oorrrr it could be because he's been in sitting still in high altitude in a 7 ft cockpit for 3 days straight.

plane looks cool...but it all has the "been there, done that" feel to it

a plane has already gone around the world without refueling, just with two people....

and the rocket up to space was just last year and is still fresh in the mind, which just seems cooler

and the dude is rich and old and fat...so who really cares (now if it was a young, handsome, hungrey dude or lass trying to prove something and make a name for themselves...maybe that would be more of a story...)

though i admit i could never be cramped into that little cockpit, surrounded by basically nothing but fuel tanks, peeing and crapping into tubes...not my vision of fun...but probably will be the way we all live in the future...

mmmm, reminds me of a story

This is the same guy that does the around the world balloon thing all the time and crashes.
He's an attention seeker isn't he? when he does his balloon thing I always have a fantasy of him landing in the everglades and never hearing from him again.

The rebel millionaire annoys me. He spends so much on trivial things, but I never hear anything about him offering money for anything useful, like a stable hydriogen fuel cell (John Stuart actually commented on this when he was on the daily show)

I'll care about his antics when he produces something valuable.

EDIT: No one seems to have mentioned this, but while Fosset flew the plane, Richard Branson was the one who funded it. Just thought I'd point this out, as my post doesn't make a lot of sense without it.

Wait. Let me get this straight. There are vehicles, powered by things called "turbines", that can fly as the sparrow flies? I must have fallen asleep at the wheel, because the last I checked Henry was whipping around in his Model A...

I don't know about the whole "no one notices" thing. It was on the front page of cnn.com all week.

Yup, traveling around the world in any manner is boring. I'll be impressed when someone jets into space and says, "I'm going straight till I find something awesome".

Dunno how you define awesome, but considering it would take 25,000 years or so at the spead of light, to travel to the other half of our galaxy... I'm thinking this feat will never be accomplished.

...into the light of a dark black night.
