The theme for this month is WATER. It is all around us, in oceans, lakes and rivers...coming down as rain...coming out of our faucets...in a glass of water, a mug of tea, or a bottle of beer...etc..... You may choose to take a photo of water in any of these forms, or others, from a picture of a single drop to a picture of a body of water, or anywhere in between. This is a very free topic this month, but regardless of what form of water that you choose for your shot, my challenge to you is to try to capture something of the feeling of the water itself.
The rules are as usual. Entries welcome and encouraged from any and all 'Novians, regardless of whether you have participated in the challenge previously. All entries must be taken during the period of the challenge itself. No heavy editing or photoshopping. I will be accepting entries until the end of the day (11.59 PM - North American Pacific Time), Sunday, May 15, 2011. When there's an eel in the lake that's as long as a snake that's a moray. |

Enter early and get a free zoom lens.
Ummm...just kidding...although I could probably find a nice one among the old SLR equipment that sits unused in the house, having been donated by grandparents to our children after the grandparents went digital. Nice gesture, but big and heavy film old cameras are not necessarily something that kids are going to take an interest in. I have not taken a picture with my own Pentax K1000 for a couple of years..... Actually, all of this is just a polite bump to remind all of the theme this week. Raining where you are? Go and take a picture of a puddle. Drinking a nice glass of beer - snap that. Or find any other source of water and submit a pic. When there's an eel in the lake that's as long as a snake that's a moray. |

Nice. If you want to unload that K1000 I know someone who desperately wants one on the cheap. (Not me)

Taken with iPhone 4, which I've learnt does great macro shots in good lighting.

Score on the first shot! Nice one, 709. (It might be off the post, but the red light's on.) Chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin?

I love the water beading effect on Spec's pic and the contrast against the leaf.
AWR's pic (for which the link is currently broken for some reason, but which I saw earlier) captures the moment of the feel of water so well. Keep them coming. When there's an eel in the lake that's as long as a snake that's a moray. |

Can anyone recommend a free hosting site which takes .jpeg files up to (jn this case) 5.9 MB? I was using photobucket for a while but it seems they only accept smaller images these days. I searched for other hosts and found one, which worked, for a day!
Thanks. A |

Another option, depending on the software you use is to change the compression of your images. The images I share on the web are downsized and use higher compression, usually less than 1MB. Makes it easier on people with slow connections too.

I 'm very busy at the moment. In case I don't find the time to do a more elaborate shot, here's my entry (for now):
On my flickr page, I have a picture where I compare this shot with a slow shutter version of the same subject. My photos @ flickr The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either. -- Benjamin Franklin |

I can't work out the scale on that picture PB PM. Is it huge or tiny?

It's somewhat large, I was rather close and it was taken with my wide angle 20-35mm lens at 20mm.

Is that part of a glacier PB?

Nope, it is Sunwapta Falls in Jasper National Park. Day time temps in the area are only 2-8ºC at this time of year, and they dip well below zero at night, so the rivers are still partly frozen. Here is a link to the same water fall from a different angle. Sunwapta Falls
I'm going to post a glacier shot in the colour photography thread. |

The contest is now over. I am just considering my choice. It is tough this month. Thanks for the entries.

I enjoyed all of the photos entered in this month's challenge. All of them, with the possible exception of PB PM's, followed the basic criterion I set out at the opening of the contest: conveying the feeling of water. PB's shot conveyed more of a feeling of ice to me – but that's okay, because it was still a cool photo (no pun intended).…and I suppose that ice is still water.
Without further delay though I am announcing my pick as winner: AWR's shot of his kids in the fountain. That picture is wonderful as capturing the exact moment of the feeling of water enveloping you in a fountain, and the feeling of joy that goes with it. The photo really spoke to me in a number of ways, including with respect to the basic criterion I set out for the contest. I hope that the picture ends up in AWR's family album, and maybe framed on his office wall was well. So over to you AWR for your selection of next month's challenge.
