i'm just getting my new dual 2.0 G5 up and running the way i need it and i remembered i got it with 500mb of ram.....*thats* not gonna work.

so, i'm gonna add 1gb.

i've had great luck with coast-to-coast memory (aka 1-800-4MEMORY) and, they offer 'hyperspeed' memory. i dont really know how much better/faster this is than the 'regular' stuff they sell. but, it must be better on some level, as its nearly twice the price.

i'm not opposed to paying extra for the stuff if it is a noticable improvement. but, my real question is if anyone has noticed a speed difference when MIXED with the standard apple ram that the machine comes with, or if it gets relegated to a lowest common denominator speed (like adding SCSI-2 to fast-SCSI, or USB1 to USB2, etc.)

i dont wanna pay a hefty premium for speed that will be unrealized.

thanks.

answered my own question. but for the benefit of others, often the premium memory has a lower latency. in the case of the 'hyperspeed' a quick call to them confirmed--'hyperspeed' is just their own name brand, as opposed to generic. in *some* cases it may have a lower (faster) latency. and, in the case of the DDR 400 3200 it does--CL2. so, it'd make no sense to get the CL2 memory just to have it clock down to CL3 to match the stock ram i'm leaving in.

ended up getting the cheaper CL3 from crucial.
