The step levels don’t mean much on some models, so it depends on the mower. I use a commercial grade mower so the levels are not random numbers, but steps in inches.

• The average lawn should be cut to approximately 2-1/2" (63,5 mm) during the cool season and to over 3" (76,2 mm) during hot months. For healthier and better looking lawns, mow often and after moderate growth.
• For best cutting performance, grass over 6" (152,4 mm) in height should be mowed twice. Make the first cut relatively high; the second to desired height.
Not the most helpful. I have a range of 1 - 7 on the selector level. By that I would always want to cut on 7 to keep it closer to 4". Given I've "normally" cut on 3 I'm cutting way to short.

I should Laos say that 3 regularly scalps the yard in areas because it is far from a smooth terrain.

I just put out some seed in a bare spot. This should be interesting!
