Good may have come from this thread after all.
I was inspired to dash out a ragged, heartfelt pram poem that I call "An Ode to a Troll". If you pass it around please be sure to credit your old pal Drewprops, a permalink to the poem on my site:

An Ode to a Troll
by Drewprops

Trooplike, we ran.
To the teeth of the Troll.

Howling mad, teeth gnashing,
Danger! Danger! Troop beware!
Protect the young!
Savage, Rip, Tear, Blood, Blood,
Glorious Gore,
We rend and strip,
And still it mocks us,
Troll, Evil Troll,
You live beyond our savage instinct,
Drawing us ever toward madness.

Gone away,
not yet forgotten,
we howl,
and twist,
and bite ourselves.
Hooting, huffing,
the bloodlust must fade.

And the trophy on our wall
is but a faint hint of the
power that first called us
down from our tree.

The Troll is gone,
but he hath pwned our souls.

Steve Jobs ate my cat's watermelon.

Nice. I especially like the hooting huffing part, but I'm not sure I agree with the last line. I'm pretty sure you have it bass-ackwards.

Oh dear Carol,
May I cite to you from the everloving Wikipedia article on Internet Trolls...

Quote:
For many people, the characterising feature of trolling is the perception of intent to disrupt a community in some way. Inflammatory, sarcastic, disruptive or humorous content is posted, meant to draw other users into engaging the troll in a fruitless confrontation. The greater the reaction from the community the more likely the user is to troll again, as the person develops beliefs that certain actions achieve his/her goal to cause chaos. This gives rise to the often repeated protocol in Internet culture: "Do not feed the trolls."
Eight pages worth of troll feasting... pwned we were as surely as anything.
It makes the poem that much richer.
To laugh at ourselves is the greater education.

[edit: man, I'm even talkin' like a frikkin' poet now!!!! right on...]

But we had such great fun as a community The point is, we aren't gonna be laughing at ourselves over this. We as a community had a shitton of fun with this troll, and the thread even merited a sticky. Who wasted time here? The troll, or us? It tried to make us angry. What did we do? Mock the hell out of it, make joke after joke about it, and in all have a hell of a time. Go AN

I'm pretty sure you can't "bump" a sticky thread.

This is still one of my all-time favorite threads. It's the perfect model of why I love this place.

Well you can if you view the forums like I do. I just about live off of the View New Posts and View Today's Posts. While this is a sticky, I just about never see it anymore until it gets "bumped" and put in the new post queue.

Ah, okay, I get it now. I don't browse that way, so that's why I didn't get it.

Did you get complaints that you locked the WWDC thread too quickly? I had two thoughts about that:

1) It's nice to have a mod that is active on the boards, daily.
2) He is obviously drunk with newfound power.

A day later I can appreciate the proactiveness, so I'm leaning towards the former, but I'm keeping my eyes on you.

So it goes.

Believe me, I know.

I want this place to succeed, and I'll do all that I can to help it along. If that means using the "power", then so be it. I'll let people say what they want, act like they want. I'm not interested in banning folks over their jabber habits. However, I will do my best to act a bit more like the old-timey cops: just keeping the peace as best I can. And banning bots at the drop of a hat!

I remember in the "old days" that the rumors threads were all locked as soon as the keynote was over. I'm not sure how I felt about it at first, but soon, I got it. The admins/mods were just trying to keep the clutter down and the conversations focused. Capella dropped in and started a thread for most of the day's categories and that keeps all us crazies jabbering about the topic in question. Really improves the conversational flow and the thread makes more sense. Otherwise, the WWDC thread would be a frickin' mess!

Anyway, I'll not ban you, 709, unless you steal my Demon Pick!

Edit: I am having trouble with the cute little "edit" button that exists on every single post. I can make you guys say whatever I want!

I just noticed that "badken" is our newest member. Getting in right now to say that it is not me.

If someone is doing it for funs and giggles, then okay, have your fun. If it's a bot, tho, not gonna last very long.

I did my best to get threads per topic out as it was going, in between occasional actual bouts of working! A couple times I wans't sure if "starting the thread then continuing to edit the original post" was annoying or not, and I'm glad other people did things to split out iPadOS from iOS, etc. I would be happy to keep doing this job for future announcement days.

Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't matter. It was better that way. It was a nice, ongoing update of live events. No one has the right to ask for more.
