My little brother's getting into recording, and Asteroid would be perfect for him.

Whatever happened with that?

Apple probably abandoned it after the ThinkSecret lawsuit.

I heard that Apple eventually handed the project to M-Audio, who released a product fitting the descriptions soon after.

There are various items which Apple designs in its labs which never see the light of day. Whether this one was affected by the thinksecret leak or not, well I guess we shall never know.

PixelMix - an (almost) daily photoblog for Scotland.
BlockSoft - donationware for OSX.

I have a hard time seing why Apple would abandon "Asteriod" because of the Think Secret lawsuit. What good reasons would there be for that?

I have a hard time believing that, as well. If that's the case, then they would have also scrapped the iPod nano, the G5 iMac, and the Intel iBook (wait! That's why we haven't seen it yet!)

Yup, the iControl. Here's a thread from last year that gives a little more info.

The iControl is a MIDI controller. I thought Asteroid was supposed to be an audio interface (a bit like the Presonus Inspire 1394 actually)?

It does seem strange. Yet, in their lawsuit Apple specifically mentions the Asteroid leak as a significant issue in the case. So, yes, why would Apple then drop the Asteroid project? Beats me?

I wanted one, but when it did not show I ended up buying a MOTU 2408 PCI A/D converter, which uses a separate PCI card rather than just a FireWire connector. I only need one channel for now, but 8 channels may come in handy in the future.
