Yesterday, Wed the 19th, we could see in "Customize your mac" section, "learn more" about graphic cards, that Apple was spoken about the NVIDIA Geforce 7800 GT. But the card wasn't available in the choice...

I thank it gonna ba available soon, but today, the card has been removed from the "learn more" section
In the french apple store, the 7800 GT is still present in the "learn more" section, but was never been available.

So we must choose between a low one and a very expensive (and very good of course) one...

What do you think about it ? If we buy a 7800 GT or GTX separately, is it compatible ? Is Apple going to update his customisable options soon ?

RAHHH. I was waiting for this mac for many months... and now I gonna wait again for a graphic card !!! Damned ! I really need a good card, but I don't have the money for the Quadro FX

Julien,
You COULD just get the 6600 and then upgrade to the 7800GT card yourself once it becomes available in the retail channels. It seemed to me Apple charged quite a bit to upgrade the cards to the 5800GT in the last Revision. So it might be a wash, AND you get your PowerMac now. Just a thought.

Cheers,

I understand your frustration. I probably would not upgrade to the 7800GT when I make my purchase (very soon), but I would like to know what the cost would be. If the additional cost of upgrading the 6600 to the 7800 is less than $200, I may go for it. On the other hand if the cost is only slightly below the cost of the Quadro FX it would be out of reach. The lack of information on this card makes it difficult to make an intelligent decision.

Has anybody seen a compatibility list for graphics cards on the new G5's? There are a lot of PCI graphics cards available and one of these may be a good alternative.

I found this info on barefeats.com.

"The latest story from sales is that "they are having trouble with the card -- it's not ready for release."

This from Apple site.

Optional graphics NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, one single-link DVI port, and one dual-link DVI port; or NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 with 512MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, two dual-link DVI ports, and one stereo 3D port (occupies PCI Express 16-lane slot and adjacent four-lane slot)

Nvidia had had Mac OS X support listed on their site since long before Macs with PCIe were released. Whether that is actually true or not I don't know. If somebody wants to spot me $360 I'll gladly test it for them.

Well the 7800 GTX for PC runs roughly 500-600 bucks, so I am guessing an upgrade would probably end up being around $360 like the 6800 Ultra were before. As far as card comparison, apples website, the 7800 is about 68% faster than the 6600 in Motion 2, and 84% faster in Halo....They also say the 7800 is only 6% slower that the Quadra FX in Motino 2 and 6% slower in Halo as well....seems to me the 7800 is a better card for the money...I just hope they actually have them available sometime soon.

I would love to know how you got a PCI graphics card to work in a computer without any PCI slots. Are the expansion chassis out already?

Apple knows the 7800 GT is the card everyone wants so they're not going to offer it until they can actually fulfill orders.

And the vanilla GTX is not 500-600...It's more like $450.

That's what I decided to do for my quad.

Apple will finish to release the 7800 GT, and when this time will come, the retail card will also exist (because it's only a problem of drivers).

The price of the default card and the premium on a Mac card should somewhat cancel out, leaving upgrade price the normal 7800 price at a store, *not* the very cheapest prices occasionally on webstores and ebay but regular prices from an average store.

Just my prediction.

Or maybe the dual link 6600's cost a bit more so the upgrade price could be lower?
