Hey,
I am working as a web designer running on both mac and pc for an up and coming site. So far my clients have been okay with just some minor details from the log files recorded by the normal in house sever programs, or by a free PC program I have found. My new client, however, wants a lot more information then I can come up with so far. I need a program to be able to recall who came to the site and what pages and media they download. I need a listing of each pages overall downloads, and every files every download. Are there any mac programs out there that can do this for free, or at least that I can try before I buy? |

http://www.sawmill.net/us_downloads.html ... Sawmill is fairly good... which will allow you to try before you buy... you can also become a tester -- http://www.sawmill.net/testing.html -- to get it for free.
For a list of log apps... just googling I found this page that has a spreadsheet on various log analyzers... http://www.practicalapplications.net...ganalysis.html Edit: AWstats and Analog are OSS |

My experience has been that the quality of log file analysis often depends on the ISP.
Some ISPs offer extremely limited log data or don't include any tracking service. I've used other ISPs who support WebTrends LogAnalyzer, or Urchin or other stats packages, each offering slightly different levels of data or clickthrough paths, or similar features. Ideally, find an ISP who bundles support for a decent stats package rather than try to bolt one on where you might not have formatted data fields from an unfriendly ISP. YMMV. |
