A small magazine I'm involved with is looking to start an internal marketplace where writers can upload feature ideas, product reviews, news stories and digital photography online to the publisher for consideration (and, of course, payment if their photos, writing or story ideas are chosen for print.)

It was actually my idea. And I'm not a web guy. I have no idea what kind of tech should be used to build the thing. Any suggestions?
The magazine uses InDesign to publish their stuff, but I guess most of the submissions would come in Word format.

I was thinking of recommending some kind of online Filemaker database setup. Would that work?

Does anyone have an example of something like this in the wild?

Gah... anything but Word format. Cleanup alone will make it a pain.

What's wrong with .txt or .rtf?

Nothing, I just know a bunch of submissions already come in Word format.

.txt or .rtf would be fine with me.

As someone who's done a fair bit of publishing in academia, may I humbly say...

DIE WORD DIE

*ahem*

It may be fine to submit text in .doc format, but anything requiring figures, images, tables, equations, or, I dunno... anything outside the ASCII character set, and Word has made it a fucking nightmare, every damned time.

YMMV, of course.

But if your needs are such that Word is sufficient, then I have to believe a raw .txt file or a simplistic .rtf would be fine too.

Okay, we all hate Word. Any suggestions on how I should recommend proceeding with this idea?

I feel I little silly recommending something without the foggiest idea of how to implement it.
