This really is true for most of the people I know. They use the furniture until it is dead and no one wants it. New cushions wouldn't revive it like dead.

I bought a really expensive set of furniture when I got back from a deployment in 1998. We ended up slowing giving away the pieces until there was nothing left from it. (Actually I still have the two end tables I got with it.)

For me, the used furniture comes into play when you need something now and don't want to spend a lot of money. When we bought our house we needed furniture to make some of the rooms usable, in those few cases we did buy used. I think all of those are gone now and replaced with something more substantial and much more expensive.

We've been considering selling our house to take advantage of the stupidrediculousludicrous housing market here, and then we're like, "but what do we do with all the furniture?" I say, "Sell it," and the wife says, "Why?"

Yeah. The reality is that our 12 year-old bedroom set that cost $5000 is now worth about $50, even though it is in almost-new condition with very few marks.

Funny I should notice this thread now. We’ve spent the last two years renovating a 35 year old home. Took a lot of it right down to the studs, and except for the structural beams and kitchen cabinets, did most of the other stuff myself. I molded in a set of four Billy’s in one room to make a built-in library. I thought about just making the whole thing from poplar/pine, but making a decent door is a bit beyond my skill level. The billy doors were cheap and easy to use at least until the kids are grown. I’ll probably remove the doors down the road, when there’s less need to hide clutter - they look really sharp as open shelves.
