Where does the time go?
So much has changed, for the good and otherwise. But, right or wrong, I can’t help but still, 10 years later, kinda wonder “what would Steve think?” at each new product unveiling or major update. I don’t think that’ll ever quite go away, having been present during those lean years, his return and the heights attained during that amazing 1998-2007 period. What an amazing period to have been into all this stuff. Everything is solid and moving on its own steam; i no longer worry about the company. But I do miss that “magic” and intangible spark from that era. It isn’t the same now. Not worse, I’m not saying that. Just different. It’s been an interesting 10 years. You are missed. 😔 |

Damn. 10 years, in a flash. WWSD? Likely not look back. Tough call.

I think there's some amount of putting him on a pedestal. Not everything was rosy during his reign. But, thinking back, he made good strategic decisions at an astonishing pace. Like, think about it. In 1997, he was famously defending killing stuff like OpenDoc. On the hardware side, he was preparing the iMac. In 2001, they were putting the finishing touches to Mac OS X. That same year, they also launched iTunes and the iPod. In 2003, they introduced the G5. Mere months later, they must've gotten into talks with Intel to say, screw it, this probably isn't gonna work out. In 2005, they moved to Intel. In 2007, they launched the iPhone. No biggie. In that same era, they had major Mac OS X releases every 6 to 18 months. Meanwhile, Microsoft had massive problems, needing to reset Longhorn and release it six years after XP, as Vista. While we saw the Power Mac G4, he was thinking of the iPod. While we saw the move to Intel, he was thinking of the iPhone. Always skating where the puck is headed. The 1997-2007 Apple was small, nimble, and aggressive. I think they may have grown a little complacent since. Quote:
He was also the first "celebrity" whose passing truly hit me. |

I won't lie...I'd love to know what things would be like today, Apple-wise, had he never gotten sick.
EDIT: All that other stuff is for another day. Last edited by psmith2.0 : 2021-10-05 at 12:27. |
