Every time I attach my external USB Hard drive, the Finder crashes, requiring a force quit. It won't relaunch, and I can't even restart or log out, which forces a hard reset.

It's an External USB 2.0 2.5" Samsung MP0302H 30gig, formatted to FAT32 so I can transfer stuff to my Windows laptop. I'm using a 1.5Ghz Mini, 512MB, running 10.4.5

I think I remember an update recently that fixed things like this, but I'm not sure. I also did a search on the forum and didn't find anything similar.

Any ideas?

Anything in the Console Log or the System Log? Check /Applications/Utilities/Console.

Nothing of interest really. It's not even in the finder crash log. The last finder crash according to the log was on the 9th of February and I cant remember if that was related to attaching the hard drive.

*bump*

I finally got over procrastinating on getting out the HD from my now defunct Pismo and put it in an enclosure.

When I attached it for first time ever via Firewire, it worked nicely for few minutes. I opened some files that hasn't been opened for umm.. three years? When I try to open another file, I get the spinning beachball. At first I thought it was related to Finder and tried to relaunch it only that it'd get stuck and moving to Adium would bog it down. The force quit key combo didn't work either.

After 10 minutes, I went ahead and unplugged the firewire. All of sudden, the iMac performed all the actions that I tried to but couldn't do.

So what does that mean, and what would be the solution?

Update: I attached the external HDD using USB instead of FW and it seems to work fine now.

Could it be that because it used to be in a Pismo, it's try to compete for startup disk? Do I need to disable the system files on the HDD somewhat?

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd prefer to use firewire instead of taking up two USB ports to power the HD...

Does anyone have any clue as to why I can't attach with FW but with USB?

Buggy FW controller in the enclosure?
