I've installed Ubuntu Linux on an old PC of mine, with the aim of using it as a file (and possibly print) server for me and my wife. I don't need to get in to the nuts and bolts just yet, but I do want to make sure I've got the basic concepts right, so I'd be really grateful if someone could set me straight.
So, would I set up a separate user on the Linux server for each person that I want to have a file area (possibly including a new user for a shared area), and make some point within each user's file system shared? For example, I would create a user 'digitaldave', one called 'mrsdigitaldave' and one called 'shared', and have the home directory as the shared directory for each user. And then tell the file server that each user with an area to be available over the network has a shared area located at the shared point (the home directory from my example). I hope that makes sense! Thanks, Dave. |

A better way would be to create two users "Dave" and "The Wife"
Then create some folders somewhere else, say "/var/fileserver" or whatever. And then give the users you want to see the info, access to those folders. OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available! |
