I've never been REALLY into the Halo series on the Xbox. I've enjoyed it but not played all the versions out there or even beaten one of them for that matter.

Showtime just put out the first episode of Halo and my son wanted to watch it with me so we did. It is rated TV-MA so he doesn't have access to see it thanks to parental controls and I wanted to watch it anyway. So we watched it together and I have to say I really enjoyed the first show.

I'm going to go too far into the plot, but a hardened Spartan fighter rescues a kid and then recovers an "artifact" that reveals visions that call him to question his unwavering following of orders.

The fight scenes are done well IMO. It is space fighting skirmish styles. I'm looking forward to see where this show goes. I do hope it avoids too much drama, but then again I guess we have to have that in order to endure non-stop fighting.

Edit: I just realized who produced this and that it is rated MA. I REALLY hope they don't throw sex into it just because it is already MA. I don't need my young teen boy watching smut for the sake of "we can".

As far as I'm concerned, this is worthy of its own thread, so here it is.

Jess and I watched it last night. We're both big Halo fans, and she used to kick the crap out of me and the online crowd when she was quite young.

It was a good start, but I'm wondering where the plot is going.

I'm good with it being its own thread. I wasn't sure what the take is on here.

It seems really odd to break from "tradition" (of obedience/following orders) so fast and yet still manage to establish the power of the Spartans.

Yeah, I'm a little weird on that one. With the timeframe as it is, though, Master Chief wasn't even involved yet (although his reputation is legendary!). Halo: Reach just predates the general Halo series, and Master Chief is not the main character in that game, as the "main character" is a rookie Spartan who joins an established team, and dies at the end of the game no matter what you do!

The general premise of the Reach game-story is a group of five Spartans whose overall endgame is to get the Cortana AI aboard the UNSC Pillar of Autumn, which then accidentally finds itself at the Halo ring, where the main gameplay takes place.

Thus, this Halo series must be set at least a few months prior to Halo: Combat Evolved, and may be the lead-up story to how Master Chief 117 wound up aboard the Pillar of Autumn in the first place.

Interestingly, Master Chief was an order-following loyalist in Combat Evolved, so I don't know where this is all going.

Oh, and then there's this tidbit: Master Chief and Cortana are first introduced aboard the Pillar of Autumn immediately following the fall of Reach. How the plot is going to get around this well established bit of canon is going to be interesting, and I'm thinking that, since the previews show Cortana and 117 being introduced during this series, either the writers were told to disregard canon, or this story is going to lead us down the canonical road, which means Flood!

And I'm okay with that.

P.S. Halo fans are a bit like Star Wars/Star Trek fans. Don't be messing with canon!

Good CGI Flood infection forms will be moderately terrifying. In CE they're just grey-green balloons you pop, but IRL they would be horrifying tick/spider nightmare fuel.

Yeah, CE was creepy with average CGI. I can only imagine the little bastards in something more realistic form.

Man, now I feel like I need to start playing and finish the Halo series. At least I would have a better grasp on some of the story lines better.

I think you would only need Halo: Combat Evolved, 2, 3, and Reach to have enough understanding.

However, the Halo universe has taken on a life of its own and expanded through more games and books, plus a few tv shows and other random bits. But, those four would get you enough. At the very least, you might have a look at the Halo Wikipedia entry and hunt around a bit. Don't get too far drawn in, though.

I started playing CE this past weekend so gain some insight in to the story. I'm enjoying it thanks to Game Pass. I'm not used to the controls at all. I keep throwing grenades because that is the VATS button in Fallout.

Episode 2 was interesting but no combat. I was expecting more combat scenes I guess given it is about Spartan warriors.

Not pleased they showed the woman disrobe. That wasn't needed and didn't help the story at all. I'm grateful it was at least a "distance" shot rather than up close. I also realized it isn't TV-MA but rather TV-14 so I assumed it would be nothing but violence. At least it won't be porn though.

The astroid city was interesting. The old trainee Spartan was a nice mix to help level out the battle hardened Master Chief. Of course the whole time we are in that city my son is asking how physics really work in space.

In CE I'm just got to meet Spark after finding the Flood had been released. Enjoying the game so far, but not seeing how it actually aligns with the TV show. Or more accurately how the show aligns with the game.

Cortana being imbedded into John seems an odd play from the story. In the game John seems to "welcome" Cortana vs the show where he is dismissive at best.

Halsey is also looking more and more like the bad guy/gal in this show.

I'm enjoying the show, but I was expecting more action and less drama. I don't recall any real fighting since the first episode other the Kwan and 66 on Madrigal.

Also, can they please stop showing us people's butts? I mean really, it isn't helping the storyline at all. I feel like it is the 80's when they had to show boobs on every movie.

Was I the only one who watched this?

My kids and I finished this over the long weekend. I'm going to edit out the sex scene because it was stupid and unneeded. Yeah, it was PG-13 level sex scene but really, why did it need to be there?

I've figured out that this does not follow the games at all. Maybe the books though. I was talking to a friend who read the book but hadn't seen the series and he was talking about so many things that come up in the show that seem small and insignificant.

Overall I did enjoy it though. I was expecting more Spartans doing Spartan things, but it seemed to be more focused on politics and drama v fighting. The FPS aspect was really cool during some of the fight scenes though!

It was a fun, low investment action series.
