Ok so I loaded some new music into iTunes, and out of the bluw i ran out of HD space. I had at least 2 gigs free when I added the music so I started to look at how much space my music folder used. Turns out that all the music I have in my Music folder is also located in the iTunes Music Library folder (this is probably old news t you guys but new to me). I have tried to move my music into the iTML folder to see if that would help but it doesnt.
I find it kind of useless to have my music files on my HD twice so I thought that one of you might have figured out a way to circumvent this problem.

Uncheck iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" and it will not duplicate files when adding them to iTunes.

Also, moving to Genius Bar.

Does this mean that everytime I download music from CD's for example, I'm having the music copied twice ("copy files to iTunes...is checked)? In my music library I really have music in my iTunes library as far as I can see...?

No. If you rip a CD directly in iTunes it will put the ripped songs in the aformentioned directory, only once.

^ Ok - cheers jules - I couldn't see any other music files but computers can be pesky little sods sometimes.
Thanks.
