Hoping those who have had access to Leopard can shed some light on the Finder's responsiveness.
Sometimes files don't appear immediately in the Finder (on my DuoCore 2.0 iMac 1.5gb RAM).

Recent OS X upgrades have usually resulted in slightly tweaked snappiness. But with this added eye candy on Leopard, is it possible to still have speed improvements?

I'm not so sure. The base system requirement is more of a jump from Tiger to Leopard than it was from Panther to Tiger, so unless you're on a very recent machine (read: Intel) I doubt there'd be much difference, if there was one at all.

I doubt that 10.5.0 will be snappier than 10.4.x. It will get fast though with the point releases, when they start removing debug codes and can spend time on optimizing stuff rather than scrambling to get it finished.

I just received it this morning, so limited experience so far:

It does in fact seem faster overall, noticeably so, however it's always hard to tell if this is because of the new OS, or simply the maintenance involved in upgrading.

I did a simple upgrade.

Mail seems MUCH faster, and easier to set up.

Safari is faster.

Overall, it seems about 10-15%, maybe as much as 20% in my experience (very limited) thus far

I have the aluminum 20" iMac, 2.4gHz

4GB RAM.

about 5 external drives (one now dedicated to Time Machine)

So far, very impressed-in my eyes, it is a better upgrade than panther->tiger was (I was unimpressed with that one).

One interesting thing to me was that it told me that several plugins were incompatible (such as Spam Sieve), but they worked just fine after the reinstallation.

Optimizing, sure, but removing debug codes? Why would you put debug code in a release build to begin with?

Sorry-will have to wait until I get home

I got time to install it, play for about an hour or so, then had to go back in to work.

Will play with it later, and let you know

On Tiger (and I guess Leopard), go into System Prefs --> Accounts --> My Account --> Login Items. From there, add Mail as an application to start when the OS boots, and tick it's box so that when the desktop loads, Mail should be minimized and not appear on the screen as a normal window.

Do you know for a fact that it will actually auto-hide on startup?

I think he was merely saying how to test it, not making any statement on whether or not 10.5 fixes it.

Doesn't seem to...

I asked it to load Mail at startup, which it did, but it didn't hide it.

Just me?

The menus seem a little snappier. Everything including the Finder seems to be running fine even though Spotlight is indexing everything in the back ground.

Someone over at Gizmodo says that Leopard seems fast on his 1.33 Ghz PB G4.

That's good news

Believe me - everyone agrees that it should.

But - have you actually tried this for yourself?
