I've been having a problem with my iMac that the real genius bar has told me doesn't exist, but yet despite numerous hardware tests at the apple store, the problem still persists.

When I sleep my computer sometimes when I come back, the sleep light will be off. I press a key to wake the computer and the fan goes into vacuum cleaner mode and I have to hold the power button to turn it off and press it again to boot the computer. This is a pain, yet apple cannot reproduce the error so its not one to them.

Through all of this I ended up at this forum and noticed a thread about an eMac randomly shutting down. While this isn't word for word the same problem that I am experiencing, I decided to follow the advice of one of the board members and go into the open firmware and do a reset. The interesting thing was that upon entering open firmware mode, the fan went beserk again, though i was able to reset whatever it was that i was resetting.

So I guess my long winded question comes as a pair: Has anyone experienced this sleep shutdown problem and is the fan supposed to kick into high gear when i enter the open firmware mode??? Any response would be appreciated. Thanks.

Most likely the power supply. The power supply in the iMac has a known overheating issue. When the computer reaches a certain temperature, it will shut itself off. During sleep, the powersupply is still providing power, but the fans are not running to cool it down. The defect in the unit causes it to get hot, thus setting off the thermal sensors which cause the system to abort (i.e. shut down). If your iMac starts to smell like burning rubber, power it off NOW! Anyway, it's covered under warranty. Take it to an Apple Specialist, NOT the Apple Store, and check it in.

I have applecare and took it into the Genius bar and this is where they told me to piss off. In fact, I told the guy on the phone that i thought this was a power supply issue and he basically said if it didn't pop up on a hardware test then i could theoretically have the problem for the life of the computer (which really pissed me off). Excuse my ignorance, but what is an apple specialist?

Do you have any idea of what's written in the log files when this happens...?

Next time this happens to you, go in the Console and let us know the logs that are in system.log...Maybe this can help us to solve your problem.

This was the console log from the last time it happened (June 2nd). I've bolded where I thought the crash took place since i never told it to shutdown. Have a look and see what you think.

An Apple Specialist is one of thoes cute little Apple Resellers that Apple is trying to put out of business. They have neat names like "Hard-Core Mac" and "Mac Resource" and "MacLife" (us), etc.

I just got my iMac back from repair this evening and it shut itself down with a semi-loud POP and the system.log shows some AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -122 entries. I think it may be that OS X is trying to send light dimming instructions to the SMU, but the SMU's firmware hasn't been updated since the Apple genius put the new board into my iMac. I'm going to install the firmware update and hope this solves my problem. Otherwise, I'm looking at trip #3 to the Apple store for a problem they don't think exists. At least my CPU temps are down.

Applied the light dimming firmware update and my iMac continues to spontaneously shut down. The Apple store won't take my iMac in for another look. Supposedly it passed their tests and I (as well as System.log) am imagining these problems. Very frustrated but supposedly since I have AppleCare they said I could actually get onsite service since this will be repair call #3 on this iMac.
