Since the Windows XP requires BIOS to run, does the Boot Camp install a BIOS emulator on the harddrive, so whenever the XP is booted, the emulator kicks in?

Not on the hard drive, but in the firmware (on an EEPROM). Boot Camp consists of three components:
• a firmware update that adds a BIOS compatibility mode which kicks in automatically for OSes that don't support EFI • a Setup Assistant allowing you to dynamically (without losing data) resize your Mac HFS+ partition to make room for your non-EFI OS installation • a set of Mac hardware drivers and tools for Windows, e.g. to set brightness on the MacBook Pro |
