Being relatively new to Macs, I'm not sure whether this is a problem - other than being really annoying.

I tend to put my iMac to sleep, rather than shutting down. However, it has a habit of waking up at random intervals without me asking it to. For instance, I am often woken in the night by the damn thing turning itself on. Repeatedly. Sometimes it will sleep for hours and do nothing. Other times it will wake up several times within 30 minutes.

Now admittedly I could just shut it down, rather than sleep. But I prefer the quick start-up of 'waking'.

Two questions, though:

1. Is this normal?
2. Can I stop it?

It's a 2.0Ghz 17" iMac G5, running 10.4. Would later versions of Tiger be better?

Cheers.

Have you blueteeth (I think that's the plural) input devices?

If so, turn them off when the Mac isn't in use.

Nope - just the standard wired mouse and keyboard. No BT devices in the house, either.

Can't remember if BT is switched on, however. Would that perhaps make a difference?

Possibly. Also, If you're using your Mac as a web server, it will wake up for people accessing the site on your Mac. Or, if you have file sharing enabled (over a network), it could be waking up for other users accessing your drives/printers.

You ask me for a hamburger.

In System Preferences, in the Energy Saver pane, make sure these two guys are unchecked, if they aren't:

If that doesn't work, try resetting your PRAM: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238

Also, use Software Update to upgrade the latest and greatest, Tiger v10.4.2...
