Oh, do continue to mine and craft as usual! When I perform the updates and trims, my plan is to shut down the game, download the world from T's server to my local machine, clear those smaller chunks locally using Amulet, upload back to T's server, and start it all back up. That should preserve everything you do right up to the last second, assuming you aren't working in a chunk that's about to get deleted.

I have my resource pack ready for the most part. I've compared the two releases and found there are lots of tiny changes since 1.18.x, but most are irrelevant to the kinds of things I like to clean up. The only noteworthy resources that I've changed are a couple of buckets (tadpole and snow), a new music disc, and the new mangrove logs, planks, and signs. I'll probably scrub through everything one last time looking for any nuisances to address, but I think that's it for now. Since they hired new artists a couple years ago, the default textures in Minecraft have gotten much better overall, IMO. You can see my recent changes here: https://github.com/infinitewarp/anmc...k/commits/1.19

Unless anyone wants to wait, I was thinking about running through the updates this weekend, though I was hoping Optifine would be ready by then. There are still no preview builds, but last Saturday (June 18) their Twitter account said "1.19 is now 60% complete. (fixing settings)" … but nothing since. 🤷‍♂️ It'll probably be ready in the next couple of weeks anyway. So, you guys just let me know if you'd prefer to wait or not. I haven't been using Optifine with my local 1.19, instead trying out some alternate performance and graphics rendering mods, but of course Optifine is still the reigning champ.

The thing I rely on OptiFine for mostly is its dynamic lighting, so living without it for a couple of weeks wouldn't be a dealbreaker (though it would make me tread more carefully in the new caverns).

How did banner patterns never have an icon before? Seems like an oversight on Mojang's end now that I see it. Great idea!

So it goes.

When I update the server to 1.19, I may actually install a modded server. I will limit any mods to fixes and optimizations that do not require modded clients. So, you shouldn't notice anything different.

Why?

There's been a lot of talk recently of Microsoft's intrusive and risky chat monitoring and reporting changes that they've already made to Realms servers and will be coming to self-hosted servers in 1.19.1. One of the mods I intend to install will disable that functionality in the server because we're not a public server and I trust we can self-moderate just fine. Sadly, Microsoft doesn't seem to trust server operators to configure this kind of setting themselves, and "vanilla" servers have no way to opt out.

What's so bad about this new chat moderation? It's ripe for troll abuse and results in a player's account being disabled everywhere for any kind of play, not just the walled-gardened Realms servers.

I don't want us to risk even accidentally triggering one of these reports.

I'm good with it. All I ask is we ensure mcstatus is not blocked. I'm still running an older version because it still works, but it monitors the server with my Zabbix monitoring server so I can see if it goes down, etc.

The more vanilla we are the better, simply because if I have to do the updates I don't want to have to completely relearn that build. So, some simple docs in the "current" directory should be fine.

Such a weird, overreaching, solution in search of a problem thing. Microsoft seemed to be loosening up in the last few years too, but this is straight up biblical era Microsoft. Thanks for being proactive and on top of this madness.

So it goes.

I've written the following script/doc that I'll copy to the server when I update. I've put as many relevant links in here as I could find. Sharing now in case you want to read about things ahead of time.

"No Chat Reports" is the only mod that's really necessary for the aforementioned moderation/reporting issue, but I've included these others because they're all great performance enhancers, and who doesn't want reduced IO, memory, and CPU load? They should all be fully compatible with vanilla, un-modded clients. I've been testing them locally, and everything seems to work as advertised. Also, these are all very popular mods; so, I expect they're pretty stable.

Great! I just saw that too but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

My plan is to do the 1.19 upgrade dance today:
  • package and upload my 1.19 resource pack
  • locally verify that I have the latest versions of everything for the modded server
  • upload those binaries to T's game server
  • stop the game
  • trigger a full backup, delete the large region files, trigger another backup
  • download the smaller of those two to my local system
  • perform the local smaller chunk deletes
  • upload the modified region files to the server
  • update the game scripts to use the modified 1.19 binaries
  • restart the server

Also, I see that 1.19.1 is now in a release candidate stage…

Once that's actually released and Optifine is updated (they're usually really fast with the minor patch versions) and the modded server stuff is updated (which also shouldn't take long), I'll upgrade the server accordingly. There's nothing major in that update, and its primary focus appears to be adding the controversial "social interactions" moderation integration.

I will be stopping T's game server in the next few minutes.

Meanwhile, I've set up a temporary 1.19 world at the address "applenova.com:25555" if you want to poke around in a fresh sandbox while I'm migrating things.

I've downloaded the backup, trimmed regions, and deleted chunks locally. I'm now taking the modified files on a test run locally to sanity check things before uploading back to the server.

Exciting times! Thanks for taking some time out of your Saturday to make it happen.

Curious if the mangroves will spawn in existing swamps after the trim or if they take over an old biome completely – apparently the new mangrove swamps are pretty rare. Gotta get me some frogs.

So it goes.

I had to break to cook and eat dinner in the middle of things for a while, but otherwise things are looking good locally. The manual smaller chunk removals took more time than anticipated, but I think the results are really nice.

Next step: uploading to T's server! Then I'll zoom around to force the deleted chunks to regenerate, pull another backup, generate a map, and post the end results.

Sadly, I haven't seen any in my zooming around today. I even deleted some sections of swamps as part of the cleanup, but all the regenerated swampland just has plain old stumpy oak trees again.

mc.applenova.com should be back up now running (a very slightly modded) 1.19 with a fresh overworld trim! I'll share an updated birds-eye-view map in just a bit.

One minor issue that I'll probably fix later tonight is that I noticed the server complains at startup about one (or some?) of my custom recipes. Remember those, like cooking coal into diamond? Yep, they're still there, but I think the file format has changed since I first created them long, long ago. I suspect I just need to find some recent docs or examples, and the fix should be easy.

turtle: I followed our usual pattern of updating symlinks, and the various system commands still seem happy (`systemctl restart minecraft`, `/opt/minecraft/bin/minecraft backup`). I think this version should still be working with your monitoring service, but I wasn't sure how to check 100%. Let me know if it seems to have broken or vanished, and I'll take another look.

Correction: no mangroves in existing regions, but I just spotted a large mangrove swamp in a new region along the perimeter of one of our "core" regions. I think you'll be pleased to find it, 709!

Last update for the day!

As promised, here's a 1:1::pixel:block scale birds-eye-view of the whole new world, with a bunch of 16x16 chunks strategically deleted and regenerated, and trimmed to only the core 512x512 regions. Try to spot the chunk changes!

Click for full-size image…

Also, if I goofed and accidentally removed a region that someone wanted to keep, it's not too late! I still have the full backup from before the trim, delete, and migration, and I can restore any if needed.

While I was scouting chunks recently to delete for regenerative smoothing, I had another thought, but I didn't want to hold up the 1.19 upgrade on account of it.

How would we feel about deleting 3.1? It's the one south-east of 709's museum and directly east of Ken's castle town. I peeked underground and checked the surface, and I couldn't find any signs of civilization save for one thing: preserving the canal south of the museum that runs east-west. I think the east-most structure in the vicinity is the underground collider track, and it's plenty clear of the edge. Between the collider and the edge is what appears to be an old mineshaft that has been lit up with torches and stripped of all useful resources.

With previous iterations of Minecraft's terrain generator, we would have been rightfully concerned that deleting that region could result in a new landmass blocking the canal. But now that it has really good transition smoothing?

I tried it locally, and here are the results. I explored along the edge, and it did a really good job of connecting to the canal to the west and ocean to the north. Plus, regenerating that region seems to have invited some villagers! (and who knows what underground). Here's how the new surface generated:

Thoughts? No strong feelings here one way or another, but I wanted to offer this up as an idea if we wanted to see more fresh land and resources. I'd want to get 709's and kscherer's blessing before proceeding, of course, and I'd probably just add it to the delete script and trim the whole world again to make sure bordering regions regenerate cleanly too without their old transitions.

Soooo..... I was re-digging down into the northern stronghold that got regenerated after the wipe, and guess what I found? 💀Deep Dark💀

I haven't really explored the city at all, but skirted the edges far enough away from the sculk triggers that I could dig a stairway up to sunlight. If anyone wants to take a peek the stairway down is 300-ish blocks due north of the North Portal*, at 65/-2350. I'd reset your spawn using the bed and maybe pack some of your valuables away because the Warden is no joke. First he hits you with darkness and then has some sort of sonic shriek that goes through walls. Killed me very dead in less than 30 seconds.

* If you take the nether to the North Portal it might drop you off outside of the lookout tower. Portals are acting kinda strangely in 1.19, but I haven't figured out why yet. They were working as expected in 1.18. 🤷‍♂️

So it goes.

I missed nearly all the hype and chatter around the web when the warden first debuted, but the one thing I did pick up was that it was intended to be a genuine deterrent for everyone, not just a "hard boss" for skilled players.

So, uhhh, you prompted me to look up its stats...

Spoiler (click to toggle):
The warden has 500 health points.

To compare, the ender dragon has only 200 health points.

Spoiler (click to toggle):
Also, the warden's melee attacks generally do 3x the damage compared to the ender dragon's melee attacks.

Spoiler (click to toggle):
And killing a warden only nets you a pathetic 5 xp — same as any normal zombie, skeleton, or creeper. The game really doesn't want you to kill them.

Do you watch the Hermitcraft folks? In episode 3 of their current Last Life series Impulse brought a Warden to the surface to aim it at one of the other teams LOL

In a different series he's doing (Imp & Skizz) they are doing a challenge to capture a warden and put a name tag on it - a LOT of fun to watch.

I'm less afraid of the warden than I was, but only because I'm watching skilled players who run screaming like children once they summon it LOL

I haven't regularly watched any Minecraft streams or series for a few years — the last one was just a couple hours of some very creative people building things on a heavily modded server — but that sounds fun.
