I got this new program, Butler, It seemed to be a very capable, powerful, and useful program for greater control of your computer through menu items and key commands. While I was tinkering with it to find out if I could make specific applications hot-key activated, I somehow managed to make a hot key to open
every single application in my applications folder! You can only imagine my the horror my computer must have felt. There was at least 70 applications running while more were opening, I think the total was around 80, and I'm sure it would have been a lot more because not only was it opening applications, it was also opening folders and the applications inside them. I have 63 items in my applications folder, 40 applications 23 folders, inside those folders are god knows how many things to open. I really wanted to stick it out and wait for everything to load, so that I could take a screenshot, but honestly, my computer would have been working harder than it's ever worked all night long, and even then, it'd probably be running so slowly that taking a screenshot would be frustrating and difficult. So, Butler is a neat looking program, but don't mess up when using it! |

This reminds me of a video I made back in the 10.0 (10.1?) days that I sent to my father for the sole purpose of showing him the power of Mac OS X's memory and thread management.

I don't recommend doing this since you'll probably open some headless apps and uninstallers and other evil things, but if you really want to open every app you have...
Paste this into Terminal: find / -name "*.app" -print0 | xargs -0 open DON'T DO IT. |

Done.
It took a while to find everything, but then everything started opening. It doesn't seem to have opened everything either, like it stopped before it got to calculator, alphabetically. Not sure why. All the adobe apps took FOREVER, and all my games would have been bad, but I didn't have the cd/dvd in for like unreal or battlefield. Of course I only got to battlefield because it's a 'b'. Edit: Talk about killing battery life |

I had to try as well. Only opened the programs I had in the root of my applications folder. 46 programs with tiny icons running on my 12" PB. But it worked! Snapz Pro made the most trouble, and started some feedback noise, that I struggled to stop, since everything was so slowly...
Pretty cool to "tab-switch" between more than 40 tiny application icons. 1984 is 20 years late. |

Ya know, it was under similar circumstances that I encountered the most ridiculous, and most hilarious error message I've ever gotten from a MacOS.
I remember I had at least 6 applications open in OS 9.2, and I went to open a few more, while simultaneously I was doing crap in all these apps. So the computer( 500 mhz iMac g3) suddenly crapped out, it panicked, A singular error messaged appeared above all the windows that spoke one word. Can't. |

I ran the find part of that command just to list all of my apps. The output went on for HUNDREDS of lines. Even if I executed them all, there are several full screen games that would be competing for the display. On top of that, Mac OS X has a limit to the nmber of distict processes you can start. You'll see in my movie above (look in the terminal window in the background at the beginning) that I had hit that ceiling when I was trying it out then.

I torture test my 600MHz G3 iMac fairly often. It's brutal. I'll click Safari, iChat, Mail, iTunes, and TextEdit in rapid-fire succession. I usually have time to go crack a cold one and get back before it's done opening all of them.

My search resulted in 721 different ".app"s and, of course, that doesn't include Classic applications or Carbon apps that don't need the .app extension. I guess it would be more if I reinstalled the old software and games I just have on CDs.
To put that into perspective, the above list has 305 entries. Edit: Oh crap. I hope this doesn't turn into an "I have X more apps than you do!" discussion.
