I'm really not looking to start another soon-to-be-locked thread, since endless speculation annoys the heck out of me, too.

But, I'm pretty sure that people will start up a thread just like this in just over two hours (while I'm off at work), and I want to get on top of the discussion and see what everyone's got to say -- AFTER Jobs's keynote address.

I've got you beat. I have 30 New Thread windows open each titled with a possible service, device, switch, sell-out that Steve could possibly announce. The body of each thread is identical:

I am actually quite dissapointed...so no new hardware was introduced, or does that happen not at the keynote address?

Guess no iBook purchase for me...

Okay, if we can get past the joking and auto-fellation about who posted what when...what does all this mean in the real world?

Faster Macs, more updates, more affordable hardware, etc.?

I'm not much of an "under the hood" tech type, so say it in language I can grasp.

We don't know. I'd say probably not but who knows?

I'm concerned. The transition to OS X was hard enough and it's just getting complete. Now another MAJOR transition..... I don't want to be a chicken little but....

IMO, what this means is that the iBook and PowerBook lines will continue to stagnate for the next 6+ months and the PowerMac and iMac lines will be virtually unchanged until the x86's start shipping.
I hope I'm wrong, but I can't see IBM putting any further effort into anything Apple.

Neat-O!!!

The next couple of years are going to be quite interesting. Figures, I buy a new iMac on the weekend and the next day Apple ditches the chip that runs it.

I imagine the PowerPC will still around in Macs for a while. Probably in consumer Macs while the Pro users get the first batch of Intel chips.

I'm curious to see how the "developer kits" perform in the real world. At the very least, it means that Macs won't be perceived as significantly slower (Mhz-myth type stuff) anymore. I don't know how many confused looks I get from family when I tell them that my computer is 1.33 ghz. They think "gosh, that's really slow...." If nothing else, it'll at least help perceptions....

IBM seemed to stop putting any effort into Apple 18 months ago.

Well Apple better hope that iPod sales continue to sky rocket or we're in for a painful two years.

Anyone here gonna buy a G5 now? Is anyone really thinking of investing in PPC now that Apple has declared it a dead platform?

I'm sure my opinion will change after I've gotten my dosage of RDF, but Mac sales are going to dry up real quick.

Does anyone know if the Keynote will be online soon? I've just finished reading the transcript att MacObserver and the whole thing read like a spoof from a Wintel site. I really need to see Steve say it to believe it...

And now I suppose we have to start calling the platform Mactel?

So who wants a G5 PowerBook now? Who wants a Dual Dual 3.2 Ghz PowerMac?

Well, at least they learned their lesson after the Moto debacle. "Won't get fooled again" - IBM was stagnating and Apple did not appear to be their chief concern.

At least this way they have exposure to the world's largest chip manufacturer (I'm presuming) and economies of scale should (I hope) result in price drops.

But, at this stage, who knows?

Ditto. I was considering getting a new powermac this year. Now I need to be convinced that this is at all worthwhile.

I'm not ordering any more Apple products for the University I work for. Not just because of this but also because of poor customer service when compared to the instant service we get from Dell.
Plus, why buy from a line of computers that have been killed?

Chances are, the general population won't even know what this means. Those who didn't before buy Macs because "they aren't compatible" won't be any less likely to buy them now.

Count me as 'disappointed'. I was fully committed to buying a new iMac in September. I am having substantial doubts now. I am sure that I am not the only buyer who feels that way.

I would be interested in hearing more of anything 'solid' concerning Apple's motivation for this switch. Was it mostly IBM's failure to deliver on G5 updates?
