I've been starting to use DEVONthink again. It's a pretty nifty app. Anyway, it uses a lot of the frameworks provided by the system for its core functions, including its text stuff. I had made several documents with lists and one day a bunch of my text disappeared! I was ticked, but it turns out it's a 10.4 bug.

TextEdit lists may appear to lose content

Quote:
mportant: If your TextEdit document list is missing or has been truncated, please note that the content isn't actually gone; it's just not visible to you. However, if you save the document again, the invisible information will indeed be lost.

For example, if you create the following list in a TextEdit document...

- first
- second
- third
... then save the document and open it again, you might only see this:
-
The note talks about TextEdit but it seems it affects all apps that use the text functions of the OS. I don't know what triggers the loss of text but it's something I thought people should be aware of. Come on 10.4.1!

There's also some other strangeness going on.

Make a list. Press return twice so your list looks like this:
Code:
• one • two • three non-list item
Now go to list item 3 and press return. You list now looks like this:

Code:
• one • two • three • • • non-list item
I don't know if Panther TextEdit did this or not. Anyone running 10.3 wanna check?

Oh, and bug reporter is down. I tried to log in the other day with my ADC account and couldn't. I had to email them to get access but now I can't get in again. It's almost as if they don't want me to report these bugs.

I'm actually wondering if Apple is just trying to imitate Microsoft Word's wholly inconsistent and terribly annoying auto-formatting with lists.

Panther doesn't do lists; it's a new feature in Tiger.
