Love it or hate it, the dock is a non-optional usage part of OS X. Where do you keep it?

Where do you keep your poll?

On the left. Gives me the most (vertical) screen space and doesn't interfere with using scrollbars. Also, it's set to autohide and zoom.

Bottom. Auto-hide. No bounce. No zoom.

It gets it the way too much when it's not hidden.

Bottom, not hidden. I like knowing at a glance what apps are running without having to open the dock. I use a minimal zoom. Too much of a zoom irritates me.

I was inspired by the poll because the last time I used MacOS was System 6, and 7 (at the end). There was only 1 menubar, and the apps were a drop down.

In X, there is no Apple menu anymore with application dropdowns.

In XP you have the menubar with a little quicklaunch toolbar that can fit on it, but X doesn't have that option. In Gnome/KDE etc. you can have quicklaunch icons too, but they fit on 1 bar. The dock is 2.. so it's a design choice but it feels odd right now.

System 6 rocked.

I keep mine at the bottom, not hidden, the smallest size possible, with no magnification.

On the bottom and hidden. However, I'm on a 1024x768 screen, so if I ever get a MB/MBP and a wide screen, it'll probably go to being hidden on the left side.

Right now I am using it on the left, transparent, no zoom or bounce. Many times I have used killdock to put it underneath the menu bar, so I do not even use it. The "Window" menu, apple+tab, and Quicksilver all work well enough I can get away without using it. But lately I have started using it again.

The way it should be

Even though my screen is tiny I've still got to have the dock visible at all times and anywhere else apart from the bottom would just look weird

Oh, and the magnification feature, although very cool is so annoying!

Same setting here... I tried it on the left, but It's just not as natural.

Bottom, pinned to the right corner. This way, the trash never moves when I drag stuff to it. I normally just use cmd-delete but sometimes I drag stuff to the trash and it's annoying when I don't get it just right and I accidentally move the trash over.

I would love to have some way of hiding it so that I could access it when necessary, but that wouldn't cause it to pop up all the time when I don't want it. Something like how the old OS 9 control strip was hidden unless you CLICKED on it.

Bottom, magnification, bounce, never hidden. It's so pretty! And the whole reason I got a Mac.

Interesting poll. I'm surprised how many people leave the dock at the bottom, considering there's more horizontal space than vertical on a display. Me: right side hidden.

I had it on the bottom for the longest time but I moved it to the right because I was thinking, "hey, I have a wide screen so I can leave it always on and it will take a much smaller % of the screen width than the screen height." It was weird getting used to it for a whle but now it is pretty natural.

The dock seems to get in the way least when on the right, yet is still perfectly visible and accessible when I can't be bothered to shift my hands from the mouse to the keyboard. I like just a hint of magnification to give it an extra tactile feeling.
