I just read this article on AI:
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1243 Then, I configured an iChat Jabber account to connect to talk.google.com, using my gmail name and password, and it connected. I don't have anyone on my buddy list right now to try it out, but everything seems to be working. |

You just gotta go into ichat, set up a Jabber account with your Gmail details, the server is talk.google.com I also got a message saying something about the password security, if you click continue, vela, your on Google Talk, all your contacts from your Gmail account should be there.

Well, all I can say is let me be the first to welcome our new Google overlords....
I hope they intertwine this with Gmail's 2gigs of storage. |

Yea, I got it to, the actual Google Talk software is Windows only I believe (for the moment) perhaps it's something to do with the software?

As far as I know, the invite system is the only way until Gmail passes beta.

I think it's nice, but not nearly enough to lure people from YIM/AIM/MSN yet. People have grown used to bloated IM software with hundreds of useless features, so Google needs to come out with something very "Googleish", which I haven't seen yet. But, this IS only a beta... |

yeah i also think so far this is googles worst idea. its going to be very difficult to convince my 50+ contacts to move to gtalk. and they have to convince their contacts to move also. this is going to be impossible specially when 90% of my contacts still use hotmail.

Bad idea? No. Difficult? Yes.
I actually think it's a very good idea, if we could have a widespread Instant Messenger based on open standards. I'm sick of Yahoo and MSN treating Mac users like second class citizens, and if Google is as cross-platform with this as they have been in the past, then it can only be a good thing. For one thing, they need to hurry and open Gmail to the public. Second, they need to find a way to use Google Talk as a free VoiP Computer to Phone client, which I think they plan on doing. Third, they need to make it look nice. This really isn't so far fetched from their business model. Who are Google's number 1 competitors in the internet search market? MSN? Yahoo? Same goes with email. The difference is in the standards. Gmail uses POP, Gtalk uses Jabber, and in the end, everyone benefits. |

I just checked it out. It works great, and the audio quality is really good.

And now Gmail is semi open to the public. If you have a cell phone, you can get an invite.
Edit: Oh yeah, it is also US only. |

It looks like a very function-poor IM service - no doubt they will add to it over time.

Ya I was disappointed when I read that article too. But at least there is potential for a good IM.

The review doesn't do it justice. The real purpose of Google Talk is to be an audio chat client. Seriously, I was talking to someone in California and it sounded like they were in the same room as me. Google Talk is not intended to be a powerfull chat client. However, I would like a conference call featrue.
Sometimes ... things that are expensive ... are worse. |
