Whew...FINALLY. Some good stuff here. Nice to see this thing in "real life". The next month or two will probably bring a lot of this type of thing.

Perhaps we could corral and contain them all within this here thread, for easy, one-stop "new iMac G5 viewing"? Articles like this, as well as our own AppleNova members could post their reviews, unpacking photos, thoughts, opinions, etc. here?

Just a thought...the alternative - 49 separate "my new iMac G5 arrived today...teh photos!!!" threads - might get a bit thick and cluttered.

If the title needed to be altered to better reflect that, fine. And if needed to be made a sticky or something, well that's fine too.

It works, but it's slower than a turtle.

Sorry.

The new iMac G5 "in real life" is really warming on me, even the 17" model! But if I could raise enough money, I'd probably still prefer a PowerMac G5 and ACD. In the meantime, I'll stick with my G4-based PowerBook.

I wholeheartedly agree that we should concentrate posts regarding unpacking photos in a single thread.

I've been waiting for a true sub-PowerBook for more than 10 years. The 11-inch MacBook Air finally delivers on all counts! It beats the hell out of both my PowerBook 2400c and my 12-inch PowerBook G4 -- no contest whatsoever.

Damn! If someone were to download these and stick them on their iDisk, it would be mucho appreciated by the poor bastards who get a "refused connection" message when trying that link.

I'm on it like Blue Bonnet, murbot. Give me three minutes. They'll be in my public iDisk folder (pscates, no password).

They aren't the best photos, but they'll do (the guy on the site says that himself).

Yea, this is the 2nd "Check out my new iMac G5!" site that I can't seem to connect to. It's like they're being /. ed.

Darn! I even turned off the celling fan in my room and opened the page, and it wouldn't load...what a letdown!!!

Naw, the page loaded, an okay review with okay pictures. I'll keep holding out for an ANer's take on the box unpacking. Y'all are so good at them

Wow... that chin really is grotesquely huge...

Nice though, overall. It looks much better there than on Apple's site.

There's a more complete unpacking experience in the iMac forum over at macnn.com.

Side note; I've seen 3 iMac boxes so far, and they all look like they went through the ringer. Who is giving these boxen such a beating?

People seem to quickly forget that there is indeed an entire computer in there

Just thought I'd point that out. Doesn't make the chin any smaller, but it is pretty incredible.

Saw a 17" iMac G5 on display at the Boca Raton AS. Looks great. The screen has a larger viewing angle then my 17" iMac. The left side, under the screen, was quite warm but not hot. They did not route anything but the power cord through the hole in the stand. The 4 other cords were connected directly to the i/o ports and bounded together with plastic thingees. That hole is there to route them through and help give the back a clean look. Oh well, even at Apple Expo they did the same thing. I tried the speakers by listening to some music. They sound OK, but not quite up to the current ball ones that came with the last gen. I didn't find the
chin objectionable. Great place to put stickies on. They didn't have any for sale but should have some in a couple of weeks.

Seems like a pretty reflective front surface around the display. I wonder if that could get annoying if there are lights or windows behind you. 'Cept for that, they look beautiful.

I present to you, the first 20" iMac G5 unboxing/set-up pics I've come across:

http://homepage.mac.com/mattklusza/PhotoAlbum10.html

And another 17" (nice walls, this guy has!):

Oooooh! At this point I think I could live with a big-chin 17" as well, especially with the second guy's nice walls and furniture.

Those walls look almost as reflective as the chin.

I can't see the complete wall. I wish that "thing" wasn't in the way!

Yeah, I saw it yesterday too. Didn't get a chance to play with it any, as one of the usual gang of highschool iTunes commandos had it monopolized.

Adam said that when Lisa opened it up to add RAM, they were both in silent awe for at least a full minute, over the elegance of the design and especially the cooling system. And Chris said the 20" should be in today, and in a new display window setup.

More 17" pictures, and you can buy this one on eBay.

And Kodawarisan has posted iMac G5 disassembly pictures:

you know...the ports on the imac are on the back.
doesn't that make a bit of a bitch to wall-mount it?

if they were on other side of the superdrive, they'd be a lot more accessible, although i'm sure this would be much harder to engineer.

anyway, just a thought...you unpackers let me know how it is.

Even the packaging emulates the iPod.

Funny thing is, the Dock in those pictures looks like it's in the middle of everything even though it's at the bottom of the screen.
