is there an automated way to get all the beats per minute information calculated..... i know there is a little utility where you tap along with the song and it calculates it, but that would take too long.

Just for the record, in case you have a misconception about tap-tempo stuff, you do not really have to tap along to the entire song to work out the bpm. Usually, if you can manage to keep good time a few bars should set you up fine.

However, having to do this for 100s of songs will be an admittedly tedious experience.

You got me - I'm sorry. I have not worked with audio and tempo syncing for aeons. In fact, the last thing I synced up was MTC back in the early 90s. Just as a side note, I love Live - but if I try doing audio post or adding effects, my TiPB (550MHz) begs for mercy.

I think NosferaDrew (he does audio post production for a studio) or perhaps Wrao and sunrain might be able to help out.

Oh - one more thing - if you're lucky some of the songs might have ID3 tags that reveal the tempo, but that's not to say they would be 100% correct either.

I do everything in Pro Tools which once you mark bar 1, beat 1, then bar 2, beat 1 - it extrapolates all the bars/beats for you.
So unless intlplby has Pro Tools, I can't help much.

I should also mention that being in post-production for 14 years, I never work in bars/beats mode. Since we need to lock to picture, we only work with timecode.

Here's something I found iTunes-BPM Inspector.

Yup. A good digital metronome is better than any other tool I've tried.
