My wife is going to buy me a new tv for xmas but has asked me to pick one out. There are quite a few sets out there so I'm turning to you guys. What would you recommend for under $800? I've seen some internet connected tvs out there and that's interesting but not if it's poorly implemented. I'd like some where around 42" or so. I game both on my computer and my PS3, so that's important. I've got a surround system so built-in sound isn't too important but it'd be nice to not have to deal with the receiver all the time.
Thoughts? If it's not red and showing substantial musculature, you're wearing it wrong. |

If braving the crowds and purchasing the set next week (!!!) is an option, be sure to check out all the leaked circulars at blackfriday (dot) info and the like. There are always tons of TV sales, this time of year.
As far as internet-connected TVs, Sony's internet-connected Bravias now support Netflix Watch Instantly. The PS3 does, too, but with the Bravia you wouldn't have to worry about that disc (or turn on your PS3). I've had very good experiences with Bravias, and Samsung's TVs are (usually) great too (as much as their "Touch of Color" enclosure irks me). Those are both sort of "premium" brands, and I think they're both worth the premium. I wouldn't say Bravias are worth a big premium over Samsungs, but one thing I've noted from reading the leaked circulars is that the Bravias are actually lots of times less on sale - Sony's discounting more deeply this holiday, for some reason. (Samsung probably just doesn't need to.) Hope that, uh, helps. and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong |

I constantly keep track of the best deals in TVs, because I'm gonna buy my dream TV.... ummm... Someday Real Soon Now.
Currently, I'm leaning towards amazon.com, and the midrange LG line. For example..... http://www.amazon.com/LG-42LH40-42-I...8508684&sr=1-7 $799 - 42"1080p LCD |

Gotta say, I keep coming back to the high end Panasonic plasmas. Yeah yeah, I know, but they're so *purty*.

C'mon Tori, you know they're gonna have spectacular deals posted a few days a week on Slickdeals.net. Buy locally if you have the opportunity to get a brick and mortar Slickdeal.
...and calling/e-mailing/texting ex-girlfriends on the off-chance they'll invite you over for some "old time's sake" no-strings couch gymnastics... |

And I'm not sure I'm going to brave the crowds this year to save some $ on a tv. I didn't last year and I'm glad I skipped it. Amazon had some good deals throughout the season so I'm hoping to avoid going out again. If it's not red and showing substantial musculature, you're wearing it wrong. |

Well, I'm stuck going to at least one store (my sister wants seasons two and three of Psych, $13 apiece at Target!). I actually have family in town next week, so shopping isn't exactly a priority, and I'm also not a fan of being trampled to death. Maybe I'll stop in a GameStop and bring them cookies, but that's about it.

Don't need to do BF. Slickdeals.net sales are almost as good if not better most days. I'm going to sit this BF out I think. If you find an awesome deal please let me know I'm also in the market for a television.

It's a plasma, but Sears has a 50" LG unit for $879 right now.
Here are some others to look at: http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...3598/lg-42lh30 http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...sharp-lc40e67u http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...msung-ln40b550 http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...ny-kdl-40s5100 http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...shiba-40rv525r http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...msung-ln40b530 http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...shiba-40xv645u Do you know where children get all of their energy? - They suck it right out of their parents! |

I ended up buying this t.v. for $580 during one of Amazon's lightening deals. I didn't have time to think - once 9:00 hit, I bought it. I figured I could think about it later. I haven't been able to find much info on it but it looks better than the others at the sub-$600 price point.
