Now before haters and fanboys kill me, let me just say that I am VERY close to getting an iPhone. I just want to know more about what an iPhone can and can't do so that I don't regret/wish I bought the damn thing. The apple site of course does not tell us what it CAN'T do, but I'm sure there are some big limitations on it that I'll notice after having bought it.
The first I guess is that you can't watch flash websites right? What else is there? |

I'm quite disappointed that it won't make me espresso.
Seriously... the list isn't short. Flash, Java, ssh, ftp, 3G... I can live without Flash and Java, and 3G isn't widely deployed in the US, darnit. But ssh? That would make it *so* simple for me, but nooooooo... |

GPS, MMS, Instant messaging. Though IM might be available via some websites cropping up.

OTA syncing. Why isn't this in there? It should be since iPhone uses OS X and iSync can't be that hard to port...

Nope, no MMS. Still not sure what the problem with that is... :/ The only thing it prevents is owners of MMS-phones from sending me grainy pictures of their wedding tackle at 1am after a pubcrawl. :P
Most everyone I know with an SMS/MMS phone also has a back gateway into it using email. ie, theirphonenumberhere@att.com... send to that, it gets forwarded. |

As far as I know it can't do enterprise email, i.e. Exchange.

I'm sorry but everytime I see "AJAX", I think of this:
Surely, AJAX makes your website much more brighter, no? |

And yet IT departments could easily allow the iPhone access to corporate email as outlined by The Tao of Mac.
Exchange email is, to be fair, a different story. But that remains one software update or SDK away. |

The iPhone doesn't have voice or speed dialing. The fastest way to dial someone is phone -> favorites -> select person, or contacts -> select person -> tap phone number. Same # of steps either way.

I wouldn't be able to do net banking on this thing since my bank uses Java. Gees, for something that has OS X and Safari I'm really surprised. |

Someone hasn't been paying attention lately. YouTube is converting its content to H.264 for playback by QuickTime.

OK I think it might be Java Script.
Look I don't like something that has less functionality because sooner or later you go to do something and where it would normaly work, it doesn't. Like I've got the Playstation 3 hooked up to the plasma and when I went to load up my iWeb site on it I just got a white page with a bit of text saying 'this isn't a frames compatible browser'! So the days of hooking up the old Powerbook aren't over yet. So a fat lot of good the IPhone would be if I can't load a web page that uses flash.Youtube might start supporting Quicktime now but a lot of other video sites still use flash. And there's one forum I frequent that uses embedded Youtube videos, which wont work in the iPhone browser. Also what is the video support like? Is it just as gimped as the iPod and TV? Don't mean to sound cynical just that there are other devises out there with much better codec support. |

Sadly, it can't fellate me, perhaps a 3rd party app can do that.

I'd go with the 3rd party on that one.

iPhone is the first video compatible iPod which cannot display a standard 4:3 TV image (say a recording or an iTunes purchase) without adding black bars or cropping the edges and zooming.
