www.cuil.com (pronounced "cool")

Anyone tried it ? There is a big buzz around it cause it's developped by former google dudes. Black is cool but search results aren't... too bad that they are my main critera for a search engine.

Tried this a few times yesterday. The results it returns are generally pretty wonky and often times have very little, if anything, to do with the search term. Also, the page displaying the search results is very ugly and hard to navigate - the results all look like ads!

Looks like they're doing a good job of culling, all right.

I'm really unimpressed. I tried it a handful of times, but I'm just not impressed with it at all. I might check it out again in a year or so, once they've had time to refine it a bit, but it just doesn't get the job done right now, IMO.

FAIL

I also tried my website. First hit. Not bad. But where the hell did that picture come from? Because it sure as hell didn't come from the site.

So to have a blue room, one would have to have a lot of technical expertise? Should I tell anyone who wants to paint their kids' room blue that Johnny's going to have to be smart before he can have a blue room?

It's pretty good for finding out information about bands actually. The name "cuil" is just terrible, though. If I can't say it, chances are I'm not going to use it.

A lot of the top results seem to be from directories and aggregation sites. I really hate those! They are normally just full of adverts and feeding off other sites content!

And I don't like the results layout.

Other than that is good!

OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available!

I want to install a new door in an existing wall. Google has a TON of hits using the following search phrase:

install door in existing wall

This "google killer"? Not so much... it says it found 33,776,321 hits but showed just 3 that weren't what I wanted at all.

Google, on the other hand, says it found 2,620,000 and displayed a good hit as the first link, and many links immediately afterwards contained good info.

I'll stick with Google, at least this week.

Like fcgriz, I might check it again but like in 8-12 months. They really need to get better results and find a new way to display them. Like Luca already said, it looks like ads.

Oh yeah, it's been widely reported that most of the pictures have absolutely no connection at all with the sites they're being displayed next to.

What an ugly, unfriendly (and, therefore, unusable) search site.

I'm sticking with the Goog, thanks.

Get back to me in a year or two and we'll see what's what.

Am I silly to feel a bit sad that Google is the only one engine worth going to for any serious search? It'd have been nice to have a serious competitor, as this benefits everyone. But nobody else seems capable of designing anything even remotely close as good as Google...

In all seriousness: the Cuil layout and results handling is actually pretty good. Unfortunately, the algorithm that actually delivers the results is obviously very much a work in progress. Maybe they'll get better. Maybe Google will re-employ (or even buy) them and integrate the results handling stuff back into Google (which, I suspect, may have been the business plan all along...). Maybe they'll make a living reinterpreting the results delivered by the "real" Google somehow. But they need to get a better algorithm and fast to be able to keep up...

I guess I don't really agree with you on this. I find Yahoo to be fine, and I actually prefer it for any Shopping searches. And I also really like Ask.com - especially the binocular feature. Sometimes you can tell whether a site looks promising or not with just that quick little glance and it can save you some time.

That said, I usually end up using Google because the integrated Google search bar is already installed in my browser and therefore is so convenient. I could add the others, but I don't want to waste all the space, and in the end, it's not really that big of a deal.

On a more serious note: I think the hype hit these guys before they where quite ready for it. Maybe they could slap a "beta" sign on it, just to adjust peoples expectations.

Or make that an "alpha" sign.

Well, that's good to know those have their strengths. Last time I tried them, I was unimpressed, and I think I'm scarred for life after seeing kind of results Yahoo Image search engine returns for "Disney Channel". (I wrote about it somewhere here before... prolly last year or so).

If nothing else, I'd like to see others succeed in their own ways if only to keep Google on their toes.

My instincual mannor for pronouncing that site sounded mighty close to the French word "couilles", meaning "balls" (of the testicular variety). That could be for a number of reasons right now, but take that as you will...
