iTunes will store all of the songs in it's Library folder.

Or, you can set it to keep the files in their place on your HD if you don't want to have iTunes move your files into the music Folder.

So to answer your question, no, iTunes does not automatically back up your songs.

Use and iPod or another external drive to back up that collection. Well worth it.

It's not deleted automatically, it'll ask you if you want it sent to the trash.

Nope, you have to empty the trash. I'm sure the icon for the trash is the far right of your dock. Right Click it and select empty to permanently remove it from your system.
