My Rev. C iMac started making popping, snapping, and crackling sounds this morning (I wasn't having Rice Krispies while at the computer so I'm sure it was the iMac.) and continued making these sounds throughout the day. Every time this happened the monitor also twiched. Then this evening it made a couple sounds and then abruptly lost power. It doesn't start up when pressing the power-on button. Power Supply, maybe? Any other ideas

Sounds exactly like a fried power supply.
Not sure how much Apple is going to want to replace it. But it's not going to be inexpensive. |

ebay
but I think you should just invest in a new eMac, because replacing the power supply is not going to be easy. You run the chance of hurting yourself. Get the eMac... it will rock your world. Buy an external hard drive case, plop the old drive in, and transfer anything you need from your old iMac over. no sig, how's that for being a rebel! |

Have you ever discharged the 25,000 volt charge in your CRT so you can handle it safely without killing yourself? This is a big job even for a trained and experienced service tech. |
