The S is for Speed. More to come.

EDIT: Same design as the iPhone 3G...like, exactly the same. Glossy back, no front-facing camera.

The big deal is the 2-3x faster processor. Who'da thunk.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

3 MP camera though, with autofocus. So at least there's that.

Am I the only one who thinks that "iPhone 3G S" is the least Apple-y name ever?

Haha, if they keep the 8 gig around for $99, they can even re-use last year's "twice as fast, half the price" line.

Nope. They might as well have stuck LX or GT on there!

Then again, I hated the 'MacBook' name, with its barely pronounceable hardness. Got used to it though.

Predictably, it shoots video too:

30 fps, VGA, auto focus/white balance/exposure. Not bad...but not really noteworthy, either.

EDIT: Voice Control from the home screen, too. Finally.

Voice Control is here too, apparently. But the excecution is strange: hold down the Home Button? Isn't that force-quit? Seems like it'll be from the Home Screen only; hopefully this isn't 3GS-only.

The existing 8GB iPhone 3G will remain -- for $99.

Why are they making voice control a part of the new phone instead of a feature of the new OS?

I'm guessing it is because the new phones have some sort of chip that does the voice recognition rather than software...

Wow, I nailed the iPhone predictions.

The 3Gs is impressive, but I'm hanging on to my 3G for now.

Or they're crippling the OS to sell 3GS's. It's not like they haven't shown that mentality before... *cough MMS and A2DP on EDGE iPhones cough*

Taken from the store,

For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).

I really want this. like really want.

But, I don't think I could get enough for my 3G to warrant buying this one.

I guess I'm waiting until next year.

thoughts?

i still have the 2G phone here too, plus the white 3G, and no way will i sell both just for the sake of paying full boat, but still, i should offload these things...

Really? We can't upgrade from last year's model without paying out the ass?

my plan is 20 bucks for unlimited data and 200 text messages...

going to 30 bucks plus 5 more for text is kinda sucky...

i guess edge network is cheaper than 3g...

Looks like I finally get to upgrade my EDGE phone on 6/19. The missus now (finally) wants an iPhone so I'll get her one as well.

I do want one of the new MacBooks though. Not good to know I could drive 15 minutes and they could be still in stock though.

Um, that's the way every phone ever is. The iPhone 3G was an anomaly, due only to Apple's unique agreement with AT&T for the original iPhone.

If you're eligible for an upgrade, I'd imagine it'd be cheaper. $500-700 is the "full price" of the phone (though a contract is still required).

Pretty sure what it means is that the $99, $199, $299 price points are for:

- New customers with a new two year agreement
- Existing customers who are eligible for a hand set upgrade (usually 18 months) can do so with a $18 upgrade fee (if not migrating already from an iPhone) with the signing of a new 2 year agreement

The $499, $599, and $699 prices are likely for those that:
- Are not eligible for an upgrade (less than 18 months into current contract) which will kick into a new 2 year agreement.

It's funny...I am a sucker for upgrades, and will sometimes pay good money if I feel the upgrade is a game changer...and I don't see it with this current model. I am happy with my 3G.

You know what would have made me purchase the new one despite the status of my contract? A keypad. I am very used to the touchscreen, but it has some serious limitations. there is a market for this, and I am surprised they haven't addressed this. Even video games would be easier if my finger wasn't in the way of the screen.
