It might be useful in the future, but obviously you can't use it with any current Macs. I'd say keep it just in case.

A Tori Amos fan. A search on torifile's "corrected" name will bear that out.

As you can see; I already had clicked it. Google News was unable to find relevant result on it...

I realized too late that Google News != Google search engine, though.

Yup. I created a userid YEARS ago on mciworldcom.com (my ISP at the time) "toriphile" left after my trial was over and when I went back for another trial, I couldn't use "toriphile" again, so I used torifile. It just stuck.

First thing you need to do now is put in the Macintosh Drivers CD you burned. That'll install all the drivers you'll need. Next you get an anti-virus program (there are several free ones around) and update SP2.

Oh, and FAT32 means that you'll be able to write to your windows partition in OS X. This is a good thing because you can share files that way. If you had used NTFS you wouldn't be able to write to the drive.

You HAVE to have an anti-virus program with Windows. I don't care what tensdanny says. One slip by going to a "bad" website, or connecting to an internet connection or opening a file a friend sent you, and you're screwed.

I wouldn't install the whole suite of norton stuff, though. Just the AV part.

Wouldn't any virus just screw your Windows partition, as Windows doesn't recognize HFS+?

That's my take on it, too. Personally I don't want to have do deal with fixing Windows (that's one of the reasons I use a Mac) so I like to go the prevention approach.

Seeing as MS's own recommendation at this point to an infected Win install is to nuke it from orbit and reinstall from scratch anyway, I don't know that I'd be dropping the $50 for AV software. I guess it depends on how I'd be using the Win partition.

If I were gaming, working etc. I don't think I'd bother. Get a nice firewall and don't browse the web or do e-mail.

If you're going to be browsing the web from Windows. Well, then maybe.

In most cases, yes. However, a virus that screws with the hard drive on a lower layer would affect the Mac side as well.

What steps would you have to take to make Windows sandboxed from Internet? I'm given to understand it ships with some ports open and some options that may allow access.

What virus would spread across to a partition with a file system that isn't recognized by Windows?

The virus wouldn't be able to tell it was there, as Windows wouldn't know it was there.

I'd imagine you could create a virus that would tell HD to destroy itself, so not knowing where it was wouldn't stop it from destroying the lot.

However, the virus would be limited in the scope as firmwares varies wildly.

You're assuming a file system level necessity that doesn't exist. Windows can access the entire hard drive directly. It knows the Mac partition exists; it just doesn't know what to do with it (unless you install a file system driver). It also knows the size and specs of the entire hard drive, even when it can't access the actual data on all of it. It could easily format the entire drive and get rid of everything (including itself).

And so could a virus.

Good points. It's been so long since there's been a truly nasty Windows virus I'd forgotten how crafty they could be.
