Dual 2.5 G5 much noisier than Dual 2.0 G5???

Just picked me up a new dual 2.5 G5 this weekend. Overall it's way quieter than my MDD G4, but compared to the Dual 2.0 G5 I have at work it seems the fans tend to spin up very high and loud temporarily far more often.

At work (Dual 2.0) the fans RARELY spin up. At home (Dual 2.5) the fans spin up anytime the processors are even moderately engaged.

Am I to believe it's just warmer here? Doesn't seem to be. Could it have something to do with the 2.5 being liquid cooled and the 2.0 not? Is there a way to verify that the liquid cooling is working and the fans aren't trying to compensate for malfunctioning liquid cooling?

I've installed Temp. Monitor at work and plan to do the same at home. Currently at work my processors are running at approx. 62.5 and 56 degrees. Will post home (Dual 2.5) results later.

Any help, feedback or insights would be greatly appreciated.

I really don't want to be disappointed in my brand new G5 having just thought I was rid of a noise box!

Some other people I know have had the same problem since the 10.3.8 update. 10.3.9 should hopefully fix it for you.

Thanks for the reply Noel.

Do you mean that other people are having the same issue with Dual 2.5's specifically or Dual G5's in general? What really boggles me is that it's only happening with 1 of the G5's and it's only the Dual 2.5. We have 4 Dual 2.0's here at work and I don't think the issue exists on any of them.

All machines are running 10.3.8 BTW.

Thanks again!

I think my Dual 2.0 G-5 is very quiet, but I've never compared it to your Dual 2.5.

Problem seems to be solved. Using Marcel Bresink's System Load I tried putting 100% load on my CPU's with each setting in the Energy Saver System Pref (Reduced, Highest & Automatic). Automatic yielded the loudest fan noise, Highest gave slightly less, and Reduced makes my machine silent even when engaging 100% load! Barely a peep!

Yes, but, er, that just means that your system is being loaded at 100% of 50% speed (or whatever "Reduced" underclocks your CPU's to). Hardly surprising that your Dual 1.3GHz G5 needs no fan cooling....

I run my dual 2.5s at 100% 24/7, and the fans RARELY ever spin up, on the whole it's quieter than my Toshiba P20 notebook.

2.5GHz system is 90nm, the rest are 130nm.
The system with smaller die is pushing out a lot more heat per unit of area. Even if the total thermal load is slightly smaller, the extremely concentrated heat demands more powerful cooling. That is why there is watercooling and that is why the fans whine in the 2.5GHz.
