Hello all,

My one little niggle with Tiger: Mail 2.0 failed to import the e-mail from 1.3. I kept 1.3 in a subfolder of Applications, so perhaps this was the problem.

Anyway, I went to "import mailboxes" but the option is greyed out. Have I lost my mail entirely?

PS: Anyone know when a Mail 2.0 version of the HTTPmail plug-in will be out?

Thanks

Bryson

Aha, choose...

File > Import Mailboxes...

Then select "Mail for Mac OS X." Navigate to your old ~/library/mail and it will have all your old emails...well you might need to select the mailboxes folder, I am not sure.

Have you setup an account yet? Maybe you have to do this first?

It has my .mac and my normal e-mail account - and transferred the settings fine. It's just not taken any of the actual mail across.

Hmm...don't use .mac, so maybe that is different.

I don't have Tiger - but try this:
  • go to your old home directory/Library/Mail (it should be archived on your HD)
  • locate the old mailboxes you want
  • copy (or drag) them across to your new ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes folder
  • relaunch Mail

Hope this helps.

I am not sure that is going to work. I did that and I got a lot of empty folders.

You'll notice im mail you sometime get white folders and sometimes blue ones. The white ones are not mailboxes - they are just folders. The blue ones however, are mailboxes that just happen to have other mailboxes inside them.

Also, the new mail.app stores the mails in a different structure.

I found that I could not import them all in one go. I had to select a sub folder and then import that, and repeat for each of my sub folders.

I think I will actually drag all my messages back to "inbox" and setup some smart folders.

OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available!

Oh well, as I said - I don't have Tiger. A different structure would explain the problem then I guess. If you can find out the new structure, it still may be possible to import them manually with this method perhaps, though.

I understand nested folders and all that - I did not explain them to Bryson b/c I wasn't sure whether he had them or not.

As for smart folders they sound great. I have so many sub folders, though, I'm wondering just how many smart folders I'll end up with.

Ahh Tiger - once again I'm caught in the prospect of longing to upgrade my machine and don't feel justified by paying for the OS update if I am to follow through with new hardware. Bring on the rev B iMac Apple.

Interesting.... The mbox files are in my current system, but Mail isn't reading them. I also noticed some kind of setup process that my Girlfriends PBook ran which mine didn't.

Hmmm. Oh well. I have Applecare, so I'll call them.

Ok folks, I'm feeling brave, and have installed the new Tiger version of the HTTPmail plugin. So far, apart from the documentation being utterly useless (the English documentation is in non-existent HTML files, good thing I also speak French!) it seems to be ok. There is some terminal to do, and the installer could be more elegant, but it seems to be working - and it even grabbed my old settings from 10.3 and re-applied them, which was nice.

I'll let you know if it screws me up at all.
