When do you think Mac OS 10.4.11 will be released? It's been so long since the first seed.

When it's done.

Seriously, nobody knows. Those who do aren't allowed to say.

Any particular thing you're waiting for in 10.4.11?

40 fixes so far. It would be worth to upgrade to. Link:

I'd imagine that 40 fixes are very very minor. The examples given referred to localization files, hardly something that would incite a kernel panic. The article doesn't get into specifics or mention if there's any noteworthy fix, like hiding Mail at startup.

The ability to hide mail at startup, of course.

Also, the final update for a major OS version usually includes backwards compatibility fixes for using software designed (but not limited to) for the next OS.

IIRC, 10.3.9 came after 10.4.0. This is also why the system requirements for software is often "10.3.9 or higher." Whats special about 10.3.9? Tiger compatiblity updates.

(sorry about 3 consecutive posts, but I'm on the iphone where I dont have access to copy and paste or multiquote)

Logic, logic, logic. Logic is the beginning of wisdom, Valeris, not the end.

Actually, 10.3.9 was the first (and thus far only) time Apple has done that. OS X-wise, anyway; I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled something similar in the 7.x/8.x days.

Pedantry: 10.3.9 came out after 10.4.0 hit golden master, but before it shipped to consumers.

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...pdate1039.html
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/apr/28tiger.html

You're right about the compatibility updates, though, in two major areas: support for GCC 4*, and Safari 1.3 with a WebKit build that was almost identical to the Safari 2.0 which shipped with Tiger. Thus, any app that relies on a relatively recent version of WebKit will require at least 10.3.9.

*) This is often confused with "support for Universal Binaries". It is technically possible to make a Universal Binary work with 10.2, even, but that makes for a much harder build process, and isn't Apple's recommended road. So, for simplicity's sake, "GCC 4 support" and "Universal Binary support" are very frequently treated as one and the same, even if that's not quite accurate.

I've been leaving tearful, drunken messages on Steve's answering machine at 3AM Cupertino time. It shouldn't be long before he caves in...

In fact, I may be his inspiration for Visual Voicemail.

You had me at asl

Instead of Mail hiding on start-up, there will be a dialogue box teasing rasmits. And every time he attempts to click the red widget it will zip off to a new place on the desktop. Needless to say, the "+W" will be disabled. However, there will be an option for him to "brick" his Mac.

Fortunately for us, this will only happen to rasmits. But a video-podcast will be generated on iTunes where we can observe his torment.

Steve told me so.
