Flight markers for pilots of test planes?

A lot of the desert looks the same. Could just be so they have reference points.

Interesting fact about Area51 and how it most likely got the alien and UFO stuff surrounding it. Back in the 1950's and 1960's they tested rocket and jet aircraft there before people were even aware that they existed. For the day, those planes could seem to defey the laws of physics. Just an interesting tidbit (and no, it is not gospel or anything, just my take given the facts).

I doubt if I buy the flight test markers theory. Any type of new spy planes or other military aircraft more than likely have advanced GPS, terrain mapping software piped into their glass cockpits, etc. They don't need markers. And they certainly aren't firing range targets.

More likely? The government knows how paranoid people are about Area 51 and are basically yanking your chain (like crop circle makers). The laugh's on us most likely.

Like I said before, they used to test planes out there a lot. They may very well be old reference markers that they still keep up. The day you rest your life completely on a new technology is the day it fails.

That is actually kinda funny. I used to live pretty close to ICBM silos, and they don't look like what most people imagine. They are like a flat-topped (and rather low) pyramid with a circular door in the middle. The missiles and everything else are way underground.

Those star-shaped ones are simulated SAM sites. Many of them are practice bombing ranges and there are also several simple airstrips.

I guess I can see the SAM site resemblance for the star one. But the others don't make a lot of sense. Plus I don't think that area is used for a military practice range. Nellis AFB has huge swaths of land dedicated to that purpose (many of which are out in the middle of nowhere AFAIK) so I don't think such things would be necessary near an experimental aircraft facility.

Then again it's been a while since I was up to speed on the latest. I used to be a huge military jet-nerd but I've sort of lost touch with that ever since the mid-90s. Procurement has pretty much ground to a halt though and with all the budget cuts I doubt I missed much the last 10 years. Not like the 80s and early 90s when there was something new every month it seemed like.

A bunch of those are FARMS. Pivot irrigation, stuff like that.

Anything that you see that's a dark circle (usually green) is a pivot-irrigated crop. Sheesh... getting so worked up over wheat or sorghum.

The 5th and 8th links, and several others after that, are closeups of irrigated farmland.

The other stuff looks like remote runways, reference markers, storage depots, stuff like that.

Whiting-out some buildings doesn't surprise me. If you Google'd a satellite pic of the US Senate building in my neighborhood, you'll see that they've pixelated that section of the image.

IIRC, there's a landscape photographer specializing in aerial stuff who has done several coffee table books of nature-as-symbol. Heart and icon shaped lakes, golf courses designed to look like reclining nudes... no Photoshop... not sure of the name, but I'm pretty sure he's European.

these, along with the rest that look like this, are just farms. The circles are a result of center pivot irrigation

That's edwards air force base. The markings are actually the runway for space shuttle landings.
