When I go to install the file downloaded from Apple called X11user.pkg, I get to the point where it asks me where I want to put it, but when I select Mac HD, it tells me that "newer software already exists on my computer".

When I try to run GIMP, I get a message that it requires X11, which it claims I don't have.

It says: Failed to start X11
Gimp.app requires X11 to run

I tried using the OS X disk to install it, and it installed something, but it apparently wasn't what Gimp was looking for.

What should I do?

EDIT: Basically I just want to know exactly how to get gimp running on OS X 10.4. The instructions are a bit hard to understand and I feel lost... how do you do it?

I'm pretty sure the downloadable package from Apple is only good for OS X 10.3. If you're running Tiger, you'll need to pull it off your install DVDs.

Edit: See this thread.

Copied from another thread. Someone else has done this and still has not found the X11.app in the Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities folder. Let us know if this still doesn't work:

OS X installer disk 1: Scroll down to reveal more items than in the default screen
Optional Installs.mpkg
Screen 1: Welcome
Screen 2: License
Screen 3: Destination
Screen 4: Custom Install
Expand the Applications package

Nope... I have 10.4.6 and I downloaded and installed X11 from the same site to use with Open Office and Gimp. It worked just fine.

I forgot about this, I eventually got mine to work. I think that I wasn't looking in the right place to find X11. I kept downloading metapackages and not putting them in the right place. I got it to work though, so just keep trying..

I see X11 show up in my applications>utilities folder, so try moving it there?
