Merry Christmas to one and all. It's a difficult one to endure this year though.

Right now in Ontario, there are many, many thousands of homes without power and the temperature is -14ºC outside.

Please say a prayer for them, as groups like the Red Cross and Salvation Army reach out, and utility workers from many jurisdictions work outside in these freezing temperatures to try to clear trees and branches fallen from the Ice Storm, and get them back on the grid.

That's pretty cold up there.

Our weather here is ridiculous. Literally just three days ago, it hit 71 degrees (F). Then it started dropping late Sunday and now it's 31 (with a low of 24). This is the third or fourth time since October we've had 40-50 degree swings in the space of about 24-36 hours.

Cold and clear, though...no snow this year (I've only had one white Christmas in 44 years, here in the South).

I hope that each of you have had someone to share this holiday season with, regardless of where your faith may be placed.

Last night I attended an early evening church service and was blessed to see my dad sitting in the pew next to my mom, something that seemed very unlikely several times this past year due to very serious health scares.

It's a chilly 29°F outside, so my time outside with any Santa-delivered remote control cars and/or helicopters, bicycles and various sporting goods may be cut short in favor of napping on the couch. I hope all the other kids won't mind.

I also have been on and off here over the last little while, due in part to some difficult personal circumstances, notably the illness of my mother. She has rapidly progressing dementia and is now in a nursing home. My dad is dealing with it, as are the rest of us, though sometimes with difficulty.

But I have to remember that there is much joy in life and we have the chance, and the responsibility, to live it. As my beautiful,elegant and energetic mother always did. I am enjoying this Christmas. May the joy spread around.
